Travellingatthespeedoflight · 05/11/2025 18:30

Ok I’m ready for brutal feedback (and nice feedback!)…here is my shortlist for baby that is coming in 3 weeks. In my head she’s always been a Mabel…

Middle name likely to be Rosie as chosen by older siblings (only if we don’t go with an ‘e’ sounding first name).

Mabel
Matilda
Polly
Posie
Heidi
Darcy
Elodie

"Darcy - the Tracy of the 2010s, don't"

This. I live on a council estate and wish I had a £1 for every time I hear someone yell Darcaaay!

GoldenGail · 07/11/2025 18:23

I like them all except Mabel. Sounds like an old spinster,

DuchessOfNarcissex · 07/11/2025 10:35

@theunbreakablecleopatrajones , not sure when 'a few years ago' was - its popularity is rising. Mabel

Darcy - the Tracy of the 2010s, don't. Darcy/Darcey/Darcie

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 07/11/2025 07:25

Mabel - v popular a few years ago, much less so now, if you like it, go for it

Matilda - lovely but there are a lot of them

Polly - it's very sweet but slightly babyish, I'd probably give her a full name like Marianne or something (it was traditionally a diminutive for Mary)

Posie - definitively too babyish to be a full name, but fine short for Rose, Rosanna etc, I don't think there's any point spelling it with the ie - it'll just get misspelt

Heidi - to me it's half twee half buxom German barmaid and thus weird

Darcy - the Tracy of the 2020s, don't

Elodie - it is v nice, but has got popular out of nowhere so will date a bit

TheJessops · 06/11/2025 11:36

Most of these names apart from Mabel and Posie were fairly popular where I am in the UK when I was naming children 12ish years ago. Elodie, Darcy and Heidi were all on my list

Mabel - it's just the wrong side of old lady to me, but I can see it's sweet and why people like it.

Matilda - I really like it but it was fairly popular around 12 years ago. The couple of people I know personally with daughters called this call them Tilly

Polly - really really love, I think it's just lovely.

Posie - Not a fan really, it's a bit silly, it's a name for a bunch of flowers. I prefer Primrose which is vaguely similar.

Heidi - I loved the story when i was little and had a gorgeously illustrated book. i think it's lovely.

Darcy - Really like, it's a bit of a stronger name rather than a pretty name compared to your other options.

Elodie - This was top of my list 12 years ago, I thought it was really unusual before having my first child, but I think a lot of people thought the same as I believe there's a few Elodie's about now, or similar like Amelie and Emily.

Mabel

user2848502016 · 06/11/2025 09:30

Mabel is lovely, my favourite on your list
Also like Matilda but Mabel Rosie sounds better

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 06/11/2025 09:23

Matilda or Mabel.

I do like Polly and Posy (spelled with a y), but both sound ridiculous with Rosie as a middle imo.

FlossieKirkpatrick · 06/11/2025 05:08

Mabel Rose would be my pick

ChocolateCinderToffee · 06/11/2025 05:07

Matilda Elodie

Fartughtyred · 05/11/2025 21:48

Love Matilda nn Tilly and Heidi. I did like Elodie too until a few weeks ago when my husband couldn’t understand why a girl in DS’s class was called Ella-Dee! Dislike Mabel and Darcy.

Heidi2018 · 05/11/2025 21:27

My top 3:
Polly
Heidi
Darcy

I absolutely LOVE the name Darcy!!!

Travellingatthespeedoflight · 05/11/2025 20:22

Thanks for the comments! Mabel is still winning for me. DH prefers Polly (but older ds who loves Pokemon may have ruined it for me and poor baby may end up as Poliwhirl etc etc!)

Polly a million per cent!

DuchessOfNarcissex · 05/11/2025 19:28

Polly - love it
Heidi - like but some won't
Matilda - ok but I'm not keen on Tilda and Tilly
Elodie - bland, another Ellie
Posy - twee. OK as a nn.
Mabel - no, frumpy
Darcy - well past it's sell-by date

CurlewKate · 05/11/2025 19:14

Go for Mabel-it’s the best of the lot. Mabel Rose sounds lovely.

NewJobProblem · 05/11/2025 19:10

Feedback is never too useful as everyone has different tastes, but FWIW,

Mabel, Polly, Posie, Darcy - all too twee for me.
Matilda, Heidi, Elodie - lovely.

”middle name Rosie as chosen by older siblings”
Again, different people different ideas, but I’d feel a bit miffed if anyone but my parents chose my name. Why do her siblings get to name her? She’s your daughter not their’s.

Because they’ve all decided that’s what they want to do

pambeesleyhalpert · 05/11/2025 18:56

Polly and Posie are my absolute favourites

Mumofgirls2017 · 05/11/2025 18:53

Love all, particularly Mabel, Matilda and Polly.
