My name has a male and female variant
It was number 36 the year I was given it
It was acceptable in the 80s
It's a bit French
It's also a little bit Essex
Most people shorten it

Been popular for centuries, at least 3 others in my year at school in the early 80s. The original spelling has two 'a's and a Greek meaning.

I’ve always known my name was too old for me, it was popular about 20y before I was born and ages ne. I’ve just looked and in the uk most people with my name are aged 75-93, I’m 58. I hate it. My mum was only 23 when I was born, so I have no idea why she didn’t give me something more modern.

Marie or Louise?

A very famous female singer has my name. She’s the first person you think of when you hear my name. Fairly uncommon. I don’t think there’s ever been a period in time it’s been popular, and I don’t know anyone else with the name

Adele

I was born in the 70s, my middle name had to be either Louise or Jane by law it seems, I was always one of several in every class at school, and these days I have 17 women with the same name in my phone contacts!

Nicki/NIcola ?

No, it’s just been guessed as Gloria. 😇

Mia - last two letters the same
Maria - last three letters the same.

Which would make far more sense than Mariah 🤦‍♀️😂

IDontLikeSpam · 14/10/2025 22:23

No, that’s probably one of the names I’d prefer my own to. @Glowingup has probable come the closest to it with one of her guesses.

I can think of a terribly well spoken actress and a cartoon character from the 80s with the longer version, and a singer’s wife and a character in a sitcom with my version.

Penny/Penelope?

Nope. But I can’t figure out the Roberta logic. Someone else guessed that.

Is it scarlet film star = Robert Redford?

My clue isn’t as clever as that. A couple of others guessed straight away.

I think they’re thinking uncommon and also a boy’s name, and missing out the last clue.
