Is Mack/Mac a weird and silly name?

I met a bloke called Mack once and always liked the name, but I'm not usually one to go for unusual names. Will I sound like I have tried to come up with a cool and alternative name and failed? Apparently it has Irish/Scottish roots...

While we're on the subject, is Evaline a silly way to spell Evelyn?

Not a weird name but reminds me of Cars every time I hear it Mac, Mac !!!!

But still nice !

Weegiemum · 03/06/2008 12:01

that 2nd pronounciation is eeva-lin.

MrsBadger · 03/06/2008 12:00

I think it is Mackenzie, but that's been spoilt (IMHO) by being used as a girl's name.

Or Malcolm...

Weegiemum · 03/06/2008 11:59

My sister is Eveline, pronounced eev-lin, she calls herself Evie. She has always had to spell it but likes her name, I think. Ds has a girl in his class called Evaline, pronounced Eva-lin. I think both are pretty and prefer the spellings with -ine to -yn (we have a Katherine, not a Kathryn)

Slouchy · 03/06/2008 11:49

It's Mackenzie, isn't it?
Fine if you're scots, bit crap if not.
And a no-go if your surname is ronald or donald.

Evaline is a pretty name (pronounced Ever-line as Mrs B said). If you want her to be called Eev-lin, you need to write it Evelyn.

IMVHO.

i like maverick and mac - though if he is big baby will he get 'big mac'?

hunkermunker · 03/06/2008 11:45

As long as your surname isn't "Intosh"...

ajandjjmum · 03/06/2008 11:45

DH's nephew was born last weekend, and is called Maverick - certainly unusual! Although I wouldn't choose it, I don't actually dislike it.

Have a male friend called Mac. Its his first name. Suits him and I love it.

(I guess you'll have to be prepared for lots of people thinking its Max, thats what my friend gets a lot.)

MrsBadger · 03/06/2008 11:41

Evaline is a real name but pronounced Ever-line, not Eve-lin.

Mac is fine as a shortening but I can't think what the long version shoul dbe

Mack the Knife

MargaretMountford · 03/06/2008 11:41

I also think of Dr Mac in Green Wing...he was lovely but...

castille · 03/06/2008 11:40

It's a nickname, isn't it?

At least that's what I'd think if I heard it. I'd wonder what his real name was.

Sorry

funnypeculiar · 03/06/2008 11:38

And Evelyn right way please Although I do somehow know what you mean....

funnypeculiar · 03/06/2008 11:37

Bobby Darin version

hopefully · 03/06/2008 11:35

Should i know what Mack the knife is? I am so unedcated...

I had a feeling that might be the case with Evelyn. i have developed an irrational aversion to the traditional spelling though, for no apparent reason.

Anyone else got any thoughts?

I love the name Mack and I wanted it for both ds's but dh said no both times

Spell Evelyn the correct way otherwise the child will always have to be correcting people.

MargaretMountford · 03/06/2008 11:30
