Middle name for Albert

We're pretty set on calling our baby boy Albert 💙(Albie for short) and our surname is Edwards, but we're really struggling with choosing a middle name.

These are the options we have come up with so far:

  • Albert Eric Edwards (Baby's great grandad's name was Eric, just not sure if it flows well enough 🤔)
  • Albert Sylvester Edwards (Baby's grandad's middle name and also his great great grandad's first name - pretty quirky and I am not sure if it is too odd 🤔but I like the family tie and how the name flows)
  • Albert Sebastian Edwards
  • Albert Henry Edwards
  • Albert Oscar Edwards

Would appreciate any thoughts on these (and votes!) and/or suggestions of other names that could work well. Thanks so much🤗

@BluelilacbellaThis is true, though I don't like Sylvester enough to use it as a first name. My other two children also have quite short/traditional names, so I would like this baby's name to feel like it fits with theirs. Edwards is a common surname but I have a very common first name and have never met anyone with the same full name as me 😊 - I didn't with my maiden name either, which was equally common. So I think it's unlikely that he will be confused with any other Albert Edwards during his lifetime.

With such a common surname (Edwards) I would personally choose a less common first name. Otherwise he will be one of very many Albert Edwards - which can be confusing. I love Sylvester and would use that as a first name. It’s a strong and memorable name that has meaning to your family.

Albert Sylvester Edwards ... is the most handsome, is the best to hear aloud and is historically relevant to your family.

I think I agree with this op.

One thing to consider here is you have as a surname a very classic first name (or very near to it: Edward). So, while I like Henry very much, I think you needs something to enliven it: Edward, Henry and Albert are lovely, traditional classics but together its all a bit safe.

I don't like the vowel on vowel of Albert Oscar Edwards: it creates a gulping effect and sounds like an ostrich swallowing an egg whole (like in the cartoons where you see the shape going down that long neck).

I am not a fan of Eric. Sorry, in so far as I know it connotes a relative for you.

Sebastian I think is in a weird place at the moment. It's moved from an unusual name with a certain vibe to a much-used name with a very different vibe.

I'd go for Sylvester. It has meaning for you as a family and makes his full name a little more interesting, while still keeping two nice classic names for everyday use.

I voted for Albert Eric Edwards. Nice to have the family connection, and I like the name Eric. Or, Sylvester, for the same reasons.

If you are going for family names then personally I prefer two - one from each side of the family (unless you are using Mums or Dads name for the middle). Is there another Grandad’s/Great- Grandad’s name from the other side of the family that would work with Eric?

Otherwise I think for balance you should go more classic/timeless for the middle name, since Albert is quite fashionable again at the moment - so Henry is a good shout. Other possibilities might be Thomas, Alexander, William, George etc

Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert was actually "Franz August Karl Albert Emanuel". How about one of those? I think Karl goes well.

William or Charles

Albert Oscar gets my vote, lovely flow and strong

Definitely go for one of your family names - realistically middle names are rarely used anyway so it's not that important how it sounds really. More important is the name you do give. 💙

Lovely name, my grandad was Albert Edward but obviously you can’t use that with your surname.
Love Albert Henry and Albert Eric is nice because of the family connection

Empress13 · 13/09/2025 16:21

I like Albert Henry just make sure you don’t use 2 middle names with initials R and S !

Other suggestions:
Albert James Edwards
Albert Jude Edwards (though will maybe be nicknamed to AJ!)
Albert Thomas Edwards

Middle names are great for having something meaningful so I’d go with Sylvester. A bit unusual but honouring relatives.

Cinaferna · 13/09/2025 15:52

Albert Sylvester Edwards is a great name, especially if it has family connections.

Your need to be a bit carefule with the initiials and avoid ALE, ATE, ACE.

How about Albert Michael, Albert John, Albert Magnus, Albert Stephen, Albert Nicholas?

Bluelilacbella · 13/09/2025 14:58

Sylvester is such a cool and memorable name. I much prefer it to Albie (which is very overused imo)
