Sophie is such a lovely name. Yes it's been very popular over recent years, but I don't think that really matters.

Sylvie is also very pretty, but I hear it's considered a middle aged name in France, where it comes from. Could you consider the English version, Sylvia? Time for a comeback for that.

Elara, sounds a bit made up, but could be elegant and quite nice. There are probably too many 'El-' names though.

Sophie

Sophie (I am one) with Sylvie a close runner-up. Elara sounds like a medication for female issues and I am not keen.

Sophie

CurlewKate · 10/10/2025 19:59

I’d go Sylvia.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 10/10/2025 19:59

Sylvie is still unusual, but you can't guarantee she'll be the only one around.

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 10/10/2025 19:56

Sylvie is unusual it would be really cute. I like Sophie too, its pretty classic.

Elara I really don't like and would find quite easy to confuse with other names.

KayEmAy · 10/10/2025 19:54

Love Sophie and Elara!

Jamclag · 09/10/2025 00:04

They're all lovely names.
Sylvie - seems to be having a bit of a moment - it's a lovely name but you might find toddler groups are full of them for a few years.

Sophie - is solidly classic.

Elara - is sweet in that made up name sort of way - looks like a cross between Elodie and Lara - which might also be nice options?

I have a 3 yo dad Sylvie so I love it

Sylvie - ok

Depends on what you want as they are all very different style names to me. Personally overall I think I’d go for Sylvie of the 3 because…

Sophie is a classic and the least likely to date (you meet toddlers with the name as well as women in their 50’s/60’s for example). BUT the added popularity at the moment of all the Sophia/Sofia’s too does personally put me off a bit.

Sylvie- my favourite of the 3 as I think it has such a lovely sound. It’s fairly well known but still underused in comparison to similar Sophie (or Evie). However it is trendy, rising rapidly in the charts and so potentially may date in future (as it did in France and similar Sylvia did in the UK), but tbh unless you go for a classic, many names have that risk.

Elara is beautiful but I think is going to get her name misspelt/misheard regularly. There’s a lot of newer “El” names about - for example similar Elora from the film “Willow” is more widely used (and of course just Lara alone is more popular).

Marble10 · 12/09/2025 18:42

Surprised at the popularity of Sylvie ! Too much of an nn for Sylvia which of course is a very old name

I like Alara (was my no1 for a girl but ended up having a boy). Elara (ee-Lara or ‘eye-Lara’ ? )

ShowOfHands · 12/09/2025 18:39

Sylvie is pretty.

I teach quite a lot of Sophies (9 in a smallish rural school) and it's just that bit too popular and overdone.
