Baby’s here, no name :(

DS is here and we still don’t have a name for him. I thought I loved the name Kit, I do, but I’m worried about increasing popularity, it’s up to 157 in the ONS and with a character on coronation street, I can see it increasing again. Our other child has a one syllable unisex name with an American feel, so struggling to find a name that blends well with it and both feel on an even keel. That name is in the 1000’s in terms of popularity.

I would be grateful for some suggestions, i appreciate its hard without knowing the exact name to pair with. I’d like another one syllable name. Thanks in advance x

I have a Kate and didn’t use Kit for my son for this reason 🤣

It is popular. My DD has a Kit and a Kitto in her nursery class. It’s a nice name though.

I don’t think it matters that a name is popular, it just means lots of people like the name so if you love Kit use that.

If you love the name Kit then use that.

I could understand your hesitation if it was number 1, but 157th means that only 328 babies were called kit in 2024. So while it's a well known name, it's very unlikely there will be several in a class at school.

Agreed. I like Kit and it isn't exactly number 1. Unless you choose something really odd or unpopular there is always the risk of being one a several in a class.

Kit is a great name.

My boy has a top 10 name and is the only one in the school 🤷🏼

What name does he look like?
My second boy just couldn't be called anything else once I'd seen him, it was quite a surprise as his name wasn't on our list at all.

Still suits him perfectly.

I'd choose Kit still, great name. The only repeats we've had are Louis/Louie (4 of them!) and Angus. Olivia is very popular but we only know one distantly- when DC met her they thought her name was Bolivia as so unfamiliar with the name!

By which i mean even popular names aren't everywhere, and you can never tell which names will be in a class - just go with what you love.

I love Kit though I struggled with it sounding like it should be short for something, and I didn’t like Christopher

ultimately chose a not particularly popular name for ds which has since become very popular! You can’t predict how these things will pan out

My daughter's name was supposedly a top ten name when she was born.
We've never come across another with the name that is the same age (so potentially in the same school class).
If you like the name....use the name.

I like Kit.
Traditionally Christopher on the birth certificate but these days you could probably just use Kit and no one would find it odd.
Go for Kit 🥰

I'd use Kit, I'm still a bit gutted we didn't. Will he be Christopher on the BC or just Kit from the start?

Also love Jim which would have been my top fave so for me they are similar. Not James though.

Yep, I agree with others. While I personally prefer Kit as a nn for Christopher, I think if Kit feels the one for you then don’t let supposed popularity put you off - there is such a wide spread of names now compared to in the past that they are rarely duplicated in school classes or in groups (at my sons school even the very popular names like Noah, Theo etc tend to be one a class- and btw there isn’t a single Kit yet!).

But some of my favourite other one syllable names if you need more ideas - Bram, Zack, Heath, Cal, Clark, Laith, Zev, Lev/Liev.

if you love Kit, I'd just use it.

All my children have top 10 names. And we haven't had a nursery class, school class or activity where someone has the same name in the same class. There is cross over outside of years with others with the same name in the nursery or school as a whole though.

If you love Kit, I wouldn’t let popularity put you off - less than 0.1 % babies were called Kit last year - so a very small chance of meeting others in his class / year. And any name can suddenly shoot up
in popularity - you could pick a name you like less because it’s less popular and it could suddenly become the next big thing and you’d be gutted! It’s better to use a name you love imo.
