Steven is a perfectly sensible spelling, the scottish one I believe

I am married to a David (who is NEVER a Dave) and I love the name, but our family is Davidtastic - my sister also married one, my cousin is one, his sister's partner is one, they're everywhere

But it was very 'common' in the late 70s of course. Loads of little Stevens at my primary school. They were really rough. Either lived on the council estate or army barracks, and were sad and scruffty.

I like Stephen Fry.

It's nice, it's a family name and one of my sons' middle names.

Spelt with the ph though.

Stephen is fine, but if your dh doesn't like it there's not much you can do!

Stefan is the foreign way of spelling it - not sure which country though.

I like David as well but I think that you can't help getting Steve and Dave which is why I didn't use them. It is sad the way they get shortened. I love Edward but didn't use it for the same reasons. In fact many boys names were ruled out this way because I would want to keep them as Daniel, Christopher, Thomas etc.

It's my dad's name (Stephen though), so of course I like it.

As for the 'Steve' thing, you should bear in mind that all the Stephens/Stevens in my year at school weren't nicknamed 'Steve', they were nicknamed 'Ste'. Which I think sounds horrible.

Hiya. I like it. Steven is the Scottish way of spelling it, Stephen the English. Personally, prefer Stephen. My old boss was called Stephen and he is fab.

but I really don't like Steve. Or Dave. Both of which are kind of inevitable.

we have it as second name for one of ours. (with a ph I think - - can't remember ! - my brother has it as a second name with a v).

Maybe it is a generational thing - when I was a kid Stephen was one of the most common names (along with John, Robert, Mike and Dave).

It's a name of his own generation. I wouldn't pick Jennifer for the same reason, but I bet that there are more likely to be two Arthurs than two Stephens.

Stephen Spielberg has done alright.

And it reminds me of a conversation I had with a new acquaintance with that name, years ago ... I said (re the spelling) "are you a v or a pfff?" [say it out loud] and he laughed and laughed and laughed. (He is gay.)

Anyway, I think it is a good name.

lol at David weirdy name. I've not come across a baby called John around 'ere ever. Mind you they probably spelt David Day-vyd.

Also, if Stephen's in the New Testament it's prob not as English as I thought

Nice name, not a lot of them about at the mo. Not out of fashion like Kevin and Trevor though. Good solid English name. Usually spelt with 'ph' not 'v', but not always (Spielburg is a Steven.)

What did your dp say when you asked him what was wrong with it?
