Hi I’m wanting some help/advice from you lovely ladies. I love reading threads on mumsnet but never actually posted myself. My little girl is is 5 weeks now and we are really struggling with name. I’ve got a little boy already and he’s called Frankie. I love the name Frances and would love to call her Frances Elizabeth however what’s everyone’s thoughts. Are they too similar?? We’ve had quite an extensive list of names but non have stuck. I call her Birdy for short as her little cry is soooo high pitched. Her last name is Browne

These are some of the names we’ve had on the list

Marcella
Matilda
Florence
Hattie
Marnie

Her second name will be Elizabeth after my mums cousin who doesn’t have any children and is the last of her family line. I love it, it feels timeless and I feel that Frances fits perfectly with it but a few people have said Frances is just too similar to Frankie.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Birdie is so cute. Maybe use Bridget or Brigitte and have Birdie as her pet name? Or Robina.

Holidayholiday2025 · 04/09/2025 00:40

Alice Elizabeth is lovely!

HighburyHope · 04/09/2025 00:38

Birdie is adorable!

MarxistMags · 04/09/2025 00:26

Maisie
Orla
Erin
Alicia

I actually love Birdie as a first name - and definitely no wilder than a lot of names around at the moment. Plus with such a classic middle name your daughter has options when she’s older if she doesn’t like the name.

Another suggestion would be Robin (or Robyn) Elizabeth, which could easily lead to “Birdie” as a nickname.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 04/09/2025 00:11

Florence (Florrie)

SantanaBinLorry · 04/09/2025 00:10

Birdie Browne is an amazing name! ❤️

Latenightreader · 04/09/2025 00:07

What about Flora?

I remember reading a children's book "Catherine called Birdie"

KimberleyMilkado · 04/09/2025 00:04

Beatrice Elizabeth Browne, nn Birdie.

Marnie and Hattie are nicknames. I like both Frances and Francis/Frankie, but not for siblings. Same for all male/female versions of the same name. Would you have a Paul and a Paula? A George and a Georgia?

ilovepixie · 04/09/2025 00:00

I like Frances and Frankie together.

PrincessOfPreschool · 03/09/2025 23:54

My grandmother was called Rose and Birdie was her nickname (she was tiny, kids size 13 feet!).

namechangedforvalidreasons · 03/09/2025 23:43

Out of your shortlist, Florence. Flo and Frankie. Birdie Browne is amazing, listen to Ralph Stanley singing ‘Little Birdie’ 😂 Busy Phillips also has a little Birdie.

other bouncy names, some birdish:

Cygne

Zooey

Joanie

Finch (doesn’t sit well with Elizabeth as a middle name though). Also sounds like a description, Finch Browne.

Apparently Birdie is an old-timely diminutive of Bertha or Berthe but I am not sure they’re so nice without the accompanying German/Dutch accent.

Ozmumofboys3 · 03/09/2025 23:32

I love Elizabeth, seems even more fitting if Birdie is a nickname. I also love Florence and Marnie from your list 😊

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 03/09/2025 23:32

fenella
Florence
milly
polly

Mumofteenandtween · 03/09/2025 23:24

Before I even clicked I thought Elizabeth. Such a beautiful name and so many shortenings!

She could be Ellie, Elle, Eliza, Liza, Lizzie, Liz, Libby, Lisa, Lissa, Lily, Beth, Bethie, Betty, Bet, Betsy. And now I know that Birdie is a shortening too!

Choconuttolata · 03/09/2025 23:24

Birdie is a nickname for Elizabeth. I think Elizabeth Alice sounds nice.

dybb · 03/09/2025 23:22

Frances is way too similar. They’re essentially the same name.

I love Birdie as a nickname, especially for Elizabeth. How about Robyn?

fashionqueen0123 · 03/09/2025 23:19

Marnie out of those is my favourite! I think Frances is too similar.

Tistheseason17 · 03/09/2025 23:14

I like Birdie
If it suits her - keep it!

SprayWhiteDung · 03/09/2025 23:14

almondflake · 03/09/2025 23:00

If you like Frances how about Francesca Elizabeth?

Francesca - commonly known as Frankie - so the same name as her brother?!

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/09/2025 23:11

I love Marnie and Hattie but I would say her name has evolved in to Birdy! Catharine called Birdy is a great book.

ladycarlotta · 03/09/2025 23:10

girljulian · 03/09/2025 23:08

Birdie is traditionally short for Elizabeth! Just call her Elizabeth, nn Birdie.

I was coming to say the same thing! Birdie is a nn for Elizabeth.

Would Elizabeth Frances work?

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 03/09/2025 23:10

I looked up bird related names on google. amongst the more usual robin, wren, raven etc, I spotted ENARA.- A Basque name meaning swallow.
I think Enara Elizabeth sounds lovely 🤷‍♀️
Otherwise I think Florence/Florrie is quite lovely with Frances.

hopspot · 03/09/2025 23:09

Bernadette with Bernie for short. Similar to birdie.

girljulian · 03/09/2025 23:08

Birdie is traditionally short for Elizabeth! Just call her Elizabeth, nn Birdie.
