Can I ask for some opinions on the name Joss for a boy please? One of our top choices right now. We have another son with a one syllable name

Nice short for Josiah, Joseph or Josselin

BestIsWest · 04/09/2025 21:08

Joss Ackland! I like it and we considered it for DS.

i have a Joss, short for Joseph - inspired by the great Cumbrian fell runner Joss Naylor (RIP)
He loves that he has a rare name - and I don’t think it’s chavvy at all unlike James which is as common as muck

I have a dog named Joss after Joss Naylor.

WinterFrogs · 04/09/2025 21:05

I like it a lot

HazelBeeZee · 04/09/2025 21:04

Makes me think of Jos Verstappen. His name is Johannes shortened to Jos. I like it. It’s unusual without being out there and I think quite ageless.

I like Joss - a very cool name & similar in vibe to the popular Kit & Jude

I've only known this as a girls name. I think it would be a mistake unless you actually had a boys name like Jossiah you were shortening.

Since when did Josiah have 2 Ss? Never seen that before but it is all over this thread so I am genuinely wondering 😄

No

eggandonion · 04/09/2025 18:58

My parents had a nice mechanic called Joss in the sixties. He had a black cocker spaniel called Old Dog. Joss makes me smile!

Mimilamore · 04/09/2025 18:52

Love it… what matters is whether you like it!

Ahwig · 04/09/2025 18:34

My friends son is called Joss and has been since birth however his birth certificate says Joseph so he has the 2 options but he prefers and only uses Joss.

Ddakji · 04/09/2025 18:05

The great Joss Ackland!

I like it.

AgentPidge · 04/09/2025 18:03

Joss Poldark! I love it.

Tinytigertail · 04/09/2025 18:02

Really nice name, not overused but not 'out there'

Love it. I fell in love with it after seeing Joss Ackland in a play years ago. If I met a little Joss, I’d assume his parents were probably educated and interesting people. Goodness knows how a PP has come to the conclusion it is both trying too hard AND “chavvy”. If anything, it strikes me as being the exact opposite of both those things. It is so short and plain which I like, because it is almost minimal effort. And if I had to guess Joss’s socioeconomic background from his name alone, I’d definitely plump for posh. Go for it, it’s a beautiful, understated name.

Ketzele · 04/09/2025 17:27

I like Joss. Which is damn generous of me because I got rejected by one at the age of 14. In front of all my friends.

BeefAndHorseradishSandwich · 04/09/2025 17:18

Also, it makes me think of vegan men in skinny jeans with a man bun, wearing loafers with no socks.

BeefAndHorseradishSandwich · 04/09/2025 17:17

Oh that’s awful 🤮 and a bit ‘trying too hard’. If you like that sound then go for James. It’s not that different but it’s much classier. Joss is a bit chavvy. Even Joshua (shortened to Josh) is better than Joss.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 04/09/2025 17:00

I absolutely love it, it was my top choice for DTS2, but since I got my top choice for DTS1, I had to let DH name the other one. 😅 Such a good name, go for it!

Mydadsbirthday · 04/09/2025 11:49

I think it's cool but would be much better as a nickname for Josiah or Joseph

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/09/2025 11:30

I work with a male Jos. In his case it’s short for Joshua. I know Joshua is traditionally abbreviated to Josh, but Jos works fine i thibk.

noramoo · 04/09/2025 10:52

I have a friend called Joss. Sometimes does get assumed to be a female name but that's not a big issue. It's definitely unusual - he's never met another one.

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/09/2025 10:21

I like it as a girls name, short for Jocelyn. I’ve never heard it as a boys name and would probably assume I’d misheard and he was called Josh.
