Andromeda

I've loved Andromeda for a girl for a really long time but disregarded it for coming off pretentious. However, I'm growing to think it's actually useable and not that different to many names that are becoming more widely used, or is this just because it's been running through my head for a decade I'm now desensitised?

I once heard an aspirational-type mum in a playground calling for her children: HECTOR! LYSANDER! ACHILLES! And even though I studied Classics at university, I thought: you plonker.

Hector is a perfectly good name.

Lysander is a bit more flowery but just about OK.

Achilles is terribly pretentious.

The trio: far too much.

Andi is lovely. I don’t like Andromeda because it sounds a bit clunky to me, and makes me think of androgynous / androids, but that might just be me! She’ll be Andi day to day though, which is fab.

Makes me think of the sci fi series where Andromeda was the name of the ship's AI.

Sorry for the thread derail, but Achilles killed Hector! Literally the worst name combination you can think of. Although both are nice in isolation.

Also, I have never heard of Andromeda as a child name, but I really like it.

On the TV series Andromeda they shorten it to “Romy” for a nickname.

I personally would always assume you were just a massive fan of the show if I heard you had named your child that!

Anything different gets ripped to shreds on MN and called vile 🙄

unless you suggest the name John or Susan MN instantly hate any name ideas.

personally I wouldn’t ever ask for opinions about my baby name choices on here as the consensus is to hate names or call them try hard, pretentious, down market, common.

if I were you I’d go for the name you love. In the real world it’s not as judgy as MN

Fine if you are Greek or have Greek family connections - or are prepared to pretend you do!

I’m a bit jealous of those who have Greek antecedents and can use such wonderful names. Similar names - perhaps less ‘out there’ include Daphne, Artemis (“Temmy”), Lydia, Calliope.

My husband is Greek so our three children have names that would definitely have me labelled as pretentious or “aspirational-type” by some on this thread. Eek.

I like quite like Andromeda. I probably wouldn’t have done such out there names personally without the Greek link, but don’t think there’s any real reason not to.

It’s fine if she lives in a city with an international community. What is ‘normal’ depends on nationality, ethnic origin and religious affiliation Personally, provided it is pronounceable in English - assuming that they live in the U.K. - I wouldn’t worry.

Hi @SummaLuvin just a thought - google pretty moon names. Some are lovely, usuable, many are greek & have a nice sound to them.
