Avon as a boy's name - what do you think?

I saw it in a book. The Lord/Duke was called Avon.

I'd pronounce it Ay-von (like Stratford upon Avon) not Ah-von

@LeeshaPaper the Marquis of Vidal's first name is Dominic - I quite like that one?

Is it a Georgette Heyer book? If so, the Duke of Avon's actual first name is Justin. I would think of cosmetics pyramid schemes too, and also the fact that one of the Avon moisturisers is supposed to also be a good insect repellent.

Oh my goodness 😄
Avon is off the list! Resounding NO from everyone!

Yes , the Duke of Avon. I thought it would be nice. I'm not a fan of Justin as a name though.
The son in the book is Vidal which I thought was interesting but Vidal Sassoon rules that out.

I haven't watched Blake 7.

I had watched the Wire and forgot about Avon Barksdale (?) which is maybe why it sounded like a good name - I'd heard it before.

Also Blake’s seven from 1970/80’s had a male villain called avon

Neighbours87 · 27/08/2025 12:01

Where do you live? In N Ireland “your da sells Avon” is used as an insult

Lafufufu · 27/08/2025 11:37

I think pregnancy hormones are coursing round your body.... 😅

It's a big fat no.

LadySuzanne · 27/08/2025 11:35

No. I immediately thought "Ding, dong..."

What about "Aden" or "Aidan"?

AugustSlippedAwayIntoAMomentInTime · 27/08/2025 11:00

It's a Celtic name, but has been 'ruined' as a personal name by the cosmetics company. I think bullying would be rife now if you named a boy Avon.

Juliejuly · 27/08/2025 10:54

You’d be better going for Vernon, and calling him Vern.

PersephoneParlormaid · 27/08/2025 10:53

I think ‘ding dong’

RodeoJoan · 27/08/2025 10:52

Did you start off with Nile?
Avon is awful

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/08/2025 10:48

As in Stratford And…, or the make up? Just no. Sorry

PanderBare · 27/08/2025 10:47

ohyesiseethatnow · 27/08/2025 10:44

This is much nicer, OP.

Show quote history

It's awful.

cattykinns · 27/08/2025 10:10

i don’t think it would work because of the Avon lady etc. What about Afon? It’s Welsh for river. Pronounced sort of like Ah-von rather than Ay-von.

Edited

This is much nicer, OP.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/08/2025 10:43

My first though op, honestly?

DING DONG! Avon calling!

I realise that’s my age showing.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/08/2025 10:42

It's a rubber factory in a town near to where I grew up so it's a no from me

pinkbackground · 27/08/2025 10:39

No

Bobbieiris · 27/08/2025 10:39

Makes me think of the makeup and also Edward scissor hands as the mum was an Avon lady

Zov · 27/08/2025 10:38

Dreadful. 😬

granthamgrizzler · 27/08/2025 10:36

Very modern. It’s almost got quite a nice sound, a bit like Yvonne. But no.

SleepingBetsy · 27/08/2025 10:33

Avon cosmetics still exist and you can buy them in Superdrug even if the ladies have died out.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 27/08/2025 10:33

laesosalt · 27/08/2025 10:02

Yer da sells Avon

I thought that too but worried it was a little niche for mumsnet 😂

MaloryJones · 27/08/2025 10:33

Namechangeforthis88 · 27/08/2025 10:08

It is a great name but comes with challenging associations.

Absolutely

Paul Darrow played the arrogant and self obsessed Avon extremely well. He (and the Federations Travis) were my favourites
Travis is a nice name OP

cattykinns · 27/08/2025 10:32

Avon is still very much a thing round by me. Avon catalogue left on doorstep regularly, we have an Avon lady post in the village fb group and several at the hospital I work in.

MaloryJones · 27/08/2025 10:31

Oh God, No OP

Avon will always remind Me of 2 things

The Catalogue
One of the Characters in long ago series Blake's Seven , Kerr Avon (okay its a surname for Him but was known as Avon).

Blake though, that's a nice name.

Vogt · 27/08/2025 10:28

Robertplantgoddess · 27/08/2025 10:01

Blakes 7 immediately came to mind (probably as I'm old though).

Also thought that!
