really like your lists, so much crossover with my own :)

Fiona - no, only because shrek!
Marina - like
Adrienne - ok
Frances - really like this, was on our list, prefer it to Francesca
Katherine - love it, front runner on our own list. So many nicknames, I like Kate/Kit but also if spelling with a C, option for Cass/Cassie. Choice of spelling is my only conundrum with this one. I don’t mind at all that it’s common in >30s, I think it’s unusual/refreshing on a small child now.
Caroline - this one objectively all the same things as Katherine but for some reason I don’t like it!
Lucy - simple and sweet but not my favourite
Edith - too old lady and a bit trendy just now?
Jane - classic and simple, love it is a first name (overused as a middle)
Cordelia - not for me, feels too fussy
Anna - classic - same as Jane

James - love, classic, front runner for us if we have a boy
Sebastian - I think I would like it if I didn’t know a couple of horrible ones in my time!
Dominic - love it. Good nicknames
Mark - is fine
Julian - not for me, famous five!
William - classic, love, very similar feel to William for me
Rufus - nope, feels too posh to me
Christopher - nice, classic
Jasper - nice
Henry - the only Henry I know well is a dog so that’s out for me!

Other suggestions from my own long lists seeing as we have some similar tastes

  • Alexandra, Elizabeth, Margaret, Cassandra/Cassia, Rhiannon, Carys, Imogen, May, Cara, Nina
  • Benjamin, Nathaniel, Thomas, Patrick

Those are all nice, sensible names! I opened this thread with trepidation, thinking that it would be another load of awful names, but I was pleasantly surprised! So many people seem to call their children dreadful names.

I think Fiona is tasteful and timeless, as is Anna. Same for James, William, and Christopher.

MissedItByThisMuch · 21/08/2025 03:25

Great lists OP, I don’t hate any of them, and really like most. Where others see “dated” I see “underused and due a comeback”.

Pigsinblankets13 · 21/08/2025 03:23

I only like Jasper
We have extremely different taste! 😂

MirandaBlu · 21/08/2025 03:19

I really like Cordelia, Marina, Rufus and Jasper but also feel like you can't go (much) wrong with Anna, Henry, James, Katherine, Lucy, and William. Marina or Jasper would probably be my choice.

StarlightBlues · 20/08/2025 23:12

I don’t mind Lucy or Edith.

I prefer your boys list - I like Sebastian, William, Jasper & Henry.

Something like Edith Jane and Jasper William would be lovely.

Mandarinaduck · 20/08/2025 22:12

I like these strong, classic names.

I particularly like Marina, Edith, Cordelia and Jane, and Julian and Rufus for a boy.

What about Antonia, Marcus, Julius, Adrian, Nicholas?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 19/08/2025 22:34

Only like Anna and Henry.

Alexandrine · 19/08/2025 22:30

Favour by far for boys are William and James as they are so timeless. But I also like Henry and Christopher- very classic.

For girls Anna is lovely and fairly timeless too, although I also like classic Katherine and Caroline and elegant Marina.

TalulaHalulah · 19/08/2025 20:48

Sorry, I don’t like any of them. Maybe Lucy, that’s about it. But it won’t be my baby, so what do you like best?

Moreteaandchocolate · 19/08/2025 20:43

Fiona - not keen - dated, Shrek
Marina - not too keen
Adrienne - a bit dated but ok
Frances - not keen, v. Serious vibes
Katherine - ok, overused in 30+ age bracket
Caroline - like this - Carrie and Callie are nice nns
Lucy - Love!!!!
Edith - not too keen but love the nn Edie
Jane - ok, a bit dated and sensible
Cordelia - a bit fussy / prim, no good nn’s
Anna - nice but a bit bland

James - nice but a bit bland
Sebastian - love!!!
Dominic - like
Mark - a bit dated but ok
Julian - a bit wet, don’t like Jules
William - ok, not keen on Will but Bill is ok
Rufus - quite like
Christopher - nice, a little dated
Jasper - nice, a bit trendy atm
Henry - lovely if you don’t mind the popularity

I’d pick Lucy and Sebastian

deeahgwitch · 19/08/2025 16:21

I love Caroline and Anna. Lucy is nice too.
I like Dominic.

Marina
Katherine
Anna

not too fussed either way about the boys names.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 19/08/2025 13:44

That's quite a refreshing list, OP! (I mean that in a good way).

I like Katherine (and its various spellings), Lucy and Anna. I recently heard of a baby Caroline, which was unexpected, but could grow on me.

My favourite choice from your boys' list is Henry. I adore the name! After that, it would probably be Dominic, Sebastian, William, and Christopher if it was used in its glorious full form.

CarolinaBaby · 19/08/2025 13:43

Adrienne is like Helena in that there's a few ways to say it. The Adrienne I know is also pronounced Ad-ree-enne. There's an American TV presenter with the name pronounced like the male name Adrian and I've also heard it said Ayd-ree-enne

Emanwenym · 19/08/2025 13:40

@Elephantangel1991 , the Adrienne I know is Ad-ree-enn.
I'm with you with the th names but I'll add Theo and Thea to your list. Too lispy.

Elephantangel1991 · 19/08/2025 13:35

Fiona - there is nothing wrong with middle-aged Scottish women but this is the image it conjures up
Marina - quite like it
Adrienne - not sure how it's pronounced.
Frances- still prefer Francesca but it's grown on me
Katherine - ok. Like Kat or Kit as a shortening.
Caroline - also grown on me recently. Caro and Carrie are nice shortenings
Lucy - ok
Edith - dislike. I dislike lots of th ending names like Meredith, Seth, Beth, Lilith etc.
Jane - I think this may come back into fashion but not quite yet. It's not bad though.
Cordelia - ok
Anna - love Anna. My favourite on your list.

James - it's so popular. Prefer Jamie
Sebastian - I like the full name but not Seb.
Dominic - no
Mark - really dislike the sound
Julian - no
William - great name
Rufus - ok
Christopher - not a fan. Like Kit though.
Jasper - like it.
Henry - good name.

I'd go Anna and William.

FieldOfBeans · 19/08/2025 13:33

Adrienne and Christopher

CarolinaBaby · 19/08/2025 13:28

What about Bastian, Maria, Solomon

Emanwenym · 19/08/2025 13:25

It depends on the surname, if the name (or diminutive) and surname don't sound good together, then I'd think of another name.

Fiona - like but I know a nice one, so there's bias
Marina - ok, but i think of boats
Adrienne - like but I know a nice one, so there's bias
Frances - like but it gets misspelt
Katherine - like but it's a bit long
Caroline - like but it's a bit long
Lucy - like but it seems popular
Edith - not keen
Jane - love but not as a middle name
Cordelia - like but it's a bit long
Anna - like

James - love but not as a middle name
Sebastian - not keen. Will be Seb.
Dominic - not keen. Will be Dom.
Mark - can't go wrong
Julian - dreadful
William - ok
Rufus - ok but I know a dog with the name
Christopher - like but it's a bit long
Jasper- ok but I know a dog with the name
Henry - popular

LoveItaly · 19/08/2025 13:16

Love:

Marina, Lucy and Caroline (especially Marina, so elegant yet underused)
James, Dominic, Mark and Christopher

Not so keen:

Frances, Cordelia, Edith
Rufus, Julian, Jasper

They are all pretty good names in my opinion, though!
