Clara or Eliza

Would anyone mind giving me their preference between Clara and Eliza. Both are possibilities for our daughter as well as a couple of others. I’m unsure which I prefer though. Thanks

Eliza

Pemba · 18/08/2025 18:08

Both nice, but I prefer Eliza. Vintage, classic and pretty. Simpler than Elizabeth.

And no ambiguity about pronunciation as with Clara. (like a pp I prefer the older English pronunciation of 'Claira' to rhyme with Sarah, but since it became popular again we seem to have gone over completely to the more European 'Clah-ra' to rhyme with Lara and Zara, and everyone will just assume it's that.

mummysmagicmedicine · 18/08/2025 18:00

I prefer Clara! There’s a lot of El names floating around atm so Clara is a bit more unique

WellyBellyBoo · 18/08/2025 10:05

Clara. Eliza makes me think of Eliza Doolittle from Pygmalion/My Fair Lady (and is also a pop singer).

DurdleSnore · 18/08/2025 09:40

Both lovely.

Clara Eliza would be a beautiful name if it goes with your surname.

Clara and Eliza are equally lovely for me.

I prefer Clara

DramaAlpaca · 17/08/2025 15:19

Love both. If you absolutely forced me to pick, I'd go for Clara.

TwoWheelz · 17/08/2025 15:18

I like Elizabeth and all the nick names you can get from it

MonkeyTennis34 · 17/08/2025 15:16

Clara

Uberaddict · 17/08/2025 15:13

You have good taste ! I have one of each. Sorry that’s not helpful 🤣

DuchessOfNarcissex · 17/08/2025 14:02

I don't really like either of them, but Eliza is the better of the two.
Clara is nice if you use the 'Claira' version, but that seems to have fallen out of use. Cara is nicer because it doesn't have the Cl sound.

GreyhoundGal1 · 17/08/2025 10:28

I prefer Eliza! I like the z sound in it. Clara for me always feels a bit serious and straight laced.

Alexandrine · 17/08/2025 00:02

Clara for me of the two - retro prettiness. I think the “lie” sound in Eliza isn’t as attractive.

Solaire18381 · 16/08/2025 22:59

Not sure what I like most. A friend has had a baby this year and named her Clara.

Glitterheart · 16/08/2025 22:47

We must have similar taste OP as my eldest DD was almost called Eliza (went for Isla in the end) and second DD is Clara. Decided against Eliza as felt it was likely to end up being shortened. Both beautiful names tho imo!

GreenAndWhiteStripes · 16/08/2025 22:29

Clara

Moreteaandchocolate · 16/08/2025 22:28

Clara is my favourite name at the moment - it would be my choice if I had another DD.

I like Eliza too but there are loads of teens called Eliza round here - they all go by name plus surname.

Elephantangel1991 · 16/08/2025 21:39

Clara for sure, I just don't like the sound of Eliza.

Mumofgirls2017 · 16/08/2025 21:37

Love both. Probably Clara gets the edge for me

Norastroud · 16/08/2025 21:09

Both gorgeous but I think I’d pick Eliza

minipie · 16/08/2025 21:05

Clara

(But I’d pick Cara or Elise first)

Bircoe · 16/08/2025 21:04

Eliza

girlmum6 · 16/08/2025 20:58

Thank all. Looks pretty even so far. You guys aren’t making this an easy decision, ha.

I love Clara. Eliza is fine and it’s another pretty name like “Isabelle” but Clara has an edge over it, IMO!
