Thoughts on Alia?

Also, is Alia your preferred spelling, or another variant, such as Aliya, Aaliyah, and so on?

Last name begins with a Y.

We are contemplating Molly as a middle name as that is my mother’s name. However, that is not set in stone, and depends on flow and overall ‘vibe’.

Alia Jasmine sounds very pretty.

DiscoBeat · 08/08/2025 20:54

It's OK if you're happy with people saying Alley-ah (I assumed that till I saw the other comments)

Emanwenym · 08/08/2025 20:52

Aliana makes me think Alien

BurntBroccoli · 08/08/2025 20:50

I like it. Or possibly Aliana

MonGrainDeSel · 08/08/2025 20:46

Makes me think of Alia Atreides from the Dune books. I quite like it. The Alia spelling is definitely nicer.

puddingandsun · 08/08/2025 20:46

Another similar sounding name -
Aleyna

GeorgeBeckett · 08/08/2025 20:32

I know one with this spelling. She must be nearly 60 now and has Eastern European family. I think it’s nice, it’s not a made up or try hard spelling. You’d only need told once.

I’m not totally sure it goes with Molly.

Maybe something ending in a consonant sound?

Alia Morven
Alia Mabel
Alia Isobel
Alia Jean

Similar sounding first names: Allie, Alice, Alicia, Eilidh, Alina.

merryhouse · 08/08/2025 20:16

I think it doesn't go with a Y surname "ey-u-y" is clunky

Also thought of inter alia

CoolAsACourgette · 08/08/2025 20:07

It's the standard spelling in the subcontinent. Definitely pronounced AH-lee-a. I wouldn't go for it if you wanted the emphasis on the second syllable

RentalWoesNotFun · 08/08/2025 19:42

It’s a nice name. But it doesn’t go with molly.

CheeryLemonWriter · 08/08/2025 17:49

I know two Alias - one is Arabic and the other is French. It is a beautiful international name.

ArmySurplusHamster · 08/08/2025 13:19

My immediate thought was ‘inter alia’. You probably won’t want people saying that much, so I’d think again.

Emanwenym · 08/08/2025 13:14

It's similar to many other names like Aria, Alba, Alma, Ayla, Leah.

MothPhobic · 08/08/2025 12:26

I'll admit it's kind of a pretty name, but a bit 'try hard' just for the sake of uniqueness.

The first thought that popped into my mind when I read it was that it sounds like something I'd associate with a woman's period. Whether it's a new brand of moon cup type of thing, or a period tracker. That's just my thoughts. But that'd put me right off it it lol.

No it really isn’t racism. We were asked our opinion on the name here and I gave it. I’m sure it’s a beautiful Arabic name elsewise. It isn’t the name but the spelling. But thanks for just assuming….always good to be on the lookout to accuse someone of something they didn’t do.

user1492757084 · 08/08/2025 05:42

Use Alia as the spelling.
I would pronounce it as AHL-ee-uh - rhymes with Talia.

Aaliyah and Alyia remind me of a liar.

Alia Molly Y goes okay.
Other ideas..
Ayesha Molly Y
Alexandra Molly Y
Aster Molly Y

Bravemama · 08/08/2025 01:50

My daughter is Aliyah. Pronounced Ah-LEE-ah. She gets shortened to Lee Lee :) She gets lots of compliments on her name and it really suits her. It was perfect when she was a tiny baby but now she is really growing up it's still relevant and she fits in still.

I'd do Aalia. Alia sound like a short A. lovely name

I'd do Aalia. Alia sound like a short A. lovely name.
Aalia = Aah - Lee - a
Alia = Uh - Lee - a

My DH liked the name Alia but pronounced Al-ee-a, I also pronounced it that way when I read it.

I definitely prefer the spelling Alia to the others though although could be pronounced wrong.

I don’t dislike the name but I don’t love it, it’s ok.

miniaturepixieonacid · 08/08/2025 01:35

I think it's really pretty but I've never seen that spelling.

Girls I know with that name all pronouced it slightly differently and all had different backgrounds:
Aaliyah X 2 (both Arabic) (one said AL -ee-uh and one said AHL-ee-uh)
Aliya (Russian-British) (said a - LEE -uh)
Alya (American-British) (said AL-YUH)

Emanwenym · 07/08/2025 15:25

inter alia
I'd say Alia as Al-ya not Al-ee-a.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 07/08/2025 08:48

Twentytwotwelve · 06/08/2025 21:47

It is most commonly pronounced the same as Aaliyah: ah-LEE-ah

I would presume it was pronounced a (like in cat) - lee - uh

Shayisgreat · 06/08/2025 22:45

I like it but spelt that way I'd pronounce it AL-ya rather than Ah-LEE-a.
