Girl name - Navy

Is the girl name ‘Navy’ just a bit nuts?

When I first heard it I thought it was ridiculous, but now I kind of like it. The thought of shouting ‘Navy’ across the park is a bit silly though isn’t it?

”In the Navy,
Yes, you can sail the seven seas,
In the Navy,
Yes, you can put your mind at ease”

Haven’t read the thread, but I’m guessing a fair few people have this in their heads. In theory Navy should be like Scarlet, Amber, Red, Indigo ie. usable like many colour “names”, if perhaps uncommon. But in reality Navy is also like naming your kid Army and just invites potential teasing imo.

My daughter said she loved the name Navy i think it's horrendous.
Maybe ok for a dog or cat but a child.........😂

DinaofCloud9 · 06/08/2025 20:51

It's a bit weird but I've heard worse.

ImAPreMadonna · 06/08/2025 20:49

A UK influencer / reality star has named her 2nd or 3rd daughter this.

Flannelfeet · 06/08/2025 20:47

Hopefully your second name isn't blue.

Belle604 · 06/08/2025 20:45

God no.

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 06/08/2025 20:44

'The thought of shouting ‘Navy’ across the park is a bit silly though isn’t it?'

Probably beter than shouting 'Police' across the park?

😂

cramptramp · 06/08/2025 20:30

Omg. Please do not do this to a child.

Twelftytwo · 06/08/2025 20:24

Ugh it's not even a pretty sounding word!
Would you name them "army"

And whilst I love wearing a bit of navy it's not exactly a "pretty" colour

youalright · 06/08/2025 20:23

What about Nova

goudacheese · 06/08/2025 20:19

Could you use Naeve, nn Navy?

Elizabeth1000 · 06/08/2025 20:14

Names need to function - use Nadine or Natalie if you want to nickname her Navy

What’s wrong with Sarah?

Sidebeforeself · 06/08/2025 19:59

Someone is going to come on here and say “ there’s three in DDs class”!

I think it’s more a boys name but I don’t know why

CorrectionCentre · 06/08/2025 19:57

Most colour names either stand alone in meaning i.e. it's a colour name only like Blue. Or if there's a dual meaning, the non colour meaning is something likeable too, like Violet (flower) or Coral (sea creature colony) . Navy as a shade of blue is associated with a branch of the armed forces. It's not just a coincidence, it literally gets its name from the royal navy. Great if you are descended from Horatio Nelson but to coin a phrase - it doesn't float my boat.

smileymylie25 · 06/08/2025 19:55

I know a little girl called lilac. What’s with the colour names lol

MarmaladeSandwichUnderMyHat · 06/08/2025 19:50

I love it for a girl and boy name!

youalright · 06/08/2025 19:45

What about yellow?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 06/08/2025 19:41

Bit outing but my niece is called Navy. Not a chavvy family and not American. I wasn’t sure when I first heard it but I like it now and it suits her.

mamagogo1 · 06/08/2025 19:15

Only if their brother was called army. Unlike other colours it’s the name of a branch of the military, no just no

Catpiece · 06/08/2025 19:13

I like it. Cute

I know kids called Grey or Gray.
Lots of girls are called Violet.

"Violet" is a name with a very long history of use - it was very popular in the 1920s and is derived from the flower.

The word "navy" comes from Old French "navie" meaning a "fleet of ships". "Navy blue" was the colour of British Royal Navy uniforms in the 18th century.

questionthethought · 06/08/2025 19:12

I normally don’t like these sorts of names but this one I really like!
