Girl name - Navy

Is the girl name ‘Navy’ just a bit nuts?

When I first heard it I thought it was ridiculous, but now I kind of like it. The thought of shouting ‘Navy’ across the park is a bit silly though isn’t it?

Hideous. Why saddle a poor child with this?

Oh maybe, I’ve just always known light purple as lilac.

It is, because it's the same shade of purple as the flower.

But it's a case in point really: you don't find people called "Purple."

I prefer Armie, as in Hammer.

I know kids called Grey or Gray.
Lots of girls are called Violet.

Violet is a flower so same vibe as Rose, Daisy and Heather rather than the colour

I agree that when going offroad with a name, the backward spelling adds an extra twist. If you're in for a penny, you're in for a pound I say!

If it's triplets op, how about Yvan, Ymra and Ecrofria?

It’s a Simpsons reference. An ear worm I will now struggle to shake.

Yes. Nuts. HTH.

Let's not overlook the coolness of Ecrofria!

That one makes my head hurt 😆 I really do quite like Navy (for a girl) and Yvan (for a boy)

Calliopespa · 06/08/2025 23:36

Isitreallysohard · 06/08/2025 23:35

Yvan is also quite cool too! 🤣

Weirdly, I like it

Amber Jade and Ruby are stones, and wasn't Sienna a variant of Siena in the same vein as Florence ie: a city?

But why are some colours acceptable? because they are stones?

And I thought Scarlet O'Hara was the first Scarlet.

But is it a colour name or not?

Names that are also beautiful cities or attractive gems or flowers are called that because they connote something lovely. Hence Florence, Rose, Emerald.

The colours are also named after these things because the objects have the same shade as the colour that is being described, so cornflower blue, duck egg blue, navy blue (because it is like the Navy uniform).

There are very few names for people that are the name for a colour that has no particular object of beauty with which it is associated. The only one I can think of (and there may be a back story) is Indigo.

Scarlet was originally a surname for families of scarlet cloth sellers - a bit like Mason or Turner. That's where using it as a name came in.

colours named after things are acceptable as names if they are nice things like precious stones or flowers or beautiful Italian cities.
Colours named because they’re used for uniforms - airforce and navy - not so much!
Now trying to think of colours named after other things … please no one tell me they know a kid named Charcoal!

Sienna the pigment is named after the town
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sienna

I agree the girls’ name is also after the town not the colour - after all, the latter comes in ‘raw’ and ‘burnt’!

That could be nice hyphenated: Raw-Sienna.

@hoohaal

I hope you're pregnant!

then at least you can blame this madness on pregnancy hormones!

yes, you'd sound ridiculous calling 'Navy' across a playground or ling before that in hospital!

Aout25 · 06/08/2025 23:15

Iwiicit · 06/08/2025 23:07

Maybe combine them and call your kid Gravy?

🤣🤣🤣

ErrolTheDragon · 06/08/2025 23:15

DinaofCloud9 · 06/08/2025 23:05

Why?

well, they probably won’t, because hopefully navy knickers will be an unknown garment of humiliation for them. Those of us old enough to have had to wear them for gym with an aertex shirt understand and shudder!😬😂

stayathomer · 06/08/2025 23:14

I weirdly liked it until someone above pointed out about the navy part of the army- I was thinking of the colour so now I’m thinking god no!!!
