Eliza or Florence?

Eliza with Elle or Ellie for short
Florence with Florry (sp?) for short

I like names that can be shortened - so that you can have a formal name for work and an informal name for friends & family.

I love Florence!

philmassive · 17/06/2008 10:01

Ooh, ooh, have Eliza! If either of my ds's had been dd's Eliza would have been my choice. It's lovely.

LuLuBai · 17/06/2008 09:48

Eliza at school was the pretty tomboy with a glint in her eye and un-tameable curls.

I know Florence ought to make me think of Florence Nightingale but I just think of the Magic Roundabout.

I love Eliza

Flllight · 17/06/2008 07:39

Florance!! That's the new Florence.

piratecat · 17/06/2008 07:34

Eliza, that's a really cool name.

NorthernLurker · 17/06/2008 07:32

Eliza

twosofar · 17/06/2008 07:30

Florence (Flossie) is my preference. If you are edgy about DP's ex, then Eliza is still way too close to Elizabeth for my liking!

raindropsonroses · 17/06/2008 01:53

Eliza

mashedbanana · 04/06/2008 20:49

i love eliza and florence my dd was going to be florence but when she was born it didn,t seem to suit her.both cool names though

JessJess3908 · 30/05/2008 23:20

Can i say Liza without you thinking of any annoying celebrities?

deffo Eliza for me

tudorrose · 30/05/2008 23:08

Please use Eliza, its lovely! I wanted this but it doesn't go with our surname. DD1 has the middle name Florrie which I HATE. It was my comprimise (sp?) as I would not budge over her first name. She hates it too!

3andnomore · 30/05/2008 22:39

Love both names...however....if you are then keen on distroying shortening it, I would go wiht Eliza...because, Lizzie, Liza, Ellie all sound cute enough...whilst, well, Florry just isn't that nice, imo, sorry!
Reny would be, maybe, a better shortened version (if you persist on shortening it, lol)

LyraSilvertongue · 30/05/2008 22:29

I know an Eliza and a Florence.
The Florence is shortened to Flo, which I hate.

Quite understand you can't call a baby after an ex!

I have lots of cousins who've already had children so a lot of names I might have used have been taken. DS is Daniel Patrick, generaly called Danny - my grandfather and my cousin Dan had his name already but it's just him in his generation. Another cousin has a son called Paddy so Patrick's already taken as a first name - as are several girls' names I really like.

I'm still wondering what names we could give another son if we have none.

JessJess3908 · 30/05/2008 21:45

Elizabeth is lovely - but unfortunately it's DP's X

Eliza as a name in its own right has been around since the 1700s so i don't feel bad using it.

Elkiedee - what were your boy's shortlist? If we have the same taste maybe you can help me out?

Ta Swampster, now i've seen it written down I quite like it too.

I think Florence Eliza sounds waaaaaaaaay better than Eliza Florence - trips of the tongue.

elkiedee · 30/05/2008 21:28

I was going to call my baby Eliza if he'd been a girl. But I would probably have called her Elizabeth and used Eliza as a short form.

JessJess3908 · 30/05/2008 21:24

The name or the city? Me and DP are not remotely Italian but I have 3 Florences in the (only my nan still living) so I do feel entitled to use it. Also have 2 Eliza's on the family tree. Isn't it wierd how we go back to family names when push comes to push?

Ta for all your suggestions x

Flora and Flossie are really growing on me and DP. Now i whish i was having twin girls, Florence & Eliza.

Would it be a shame to 'waste' Florence as a middle name just because Eliza Florence goes better than Florence Eliza? What would i do if i had a second girl and had used up my 2 fave names?

And can anybody come up with boy's names that are just as lovely???

I think the spreads easily joke is very dated.

GreenElizabeth · 28/05/2008 17:05

I looked on the lids of tubs of Flora recently and it doesn't say that. It is all omega 3 and low salt or buttery flavour or lower fat flora. NOTHING about spreading easily. I think that that is now assumed.
