Opinions on the name Madison.
I love it and think it is so classic and elegant. The popularity is putting us off however I feel like it won’t be that common for our little girls generation.

Madison Lilia Bates would be her full name.

I know a Masha. Asta wouldn't be a good choice.

😂Or Aster!

Esp if she goes by Ms.

Ms Aster Bates

What's with the Mashta? There's no sh in Master.

Nor is there a t is Masha. So neither the potentially real name Masha Bates or the made-up one Mashta Bates really sound like masturbates. But Mashta Bates would be closer. Maddy Bates really doesnt.

TizerorFizz · 03/08/2025 14:39

Go for Madeleine

Emanwenym · 03/08/2025 14:38

Mischance · 03/08/2025 13:53

This is a wind-up. Posters do not usually add their surname and I am sure this has been done for a reason .......

LancashireButterPie · 03/08/2025 13:49

DappledThings · 02/08/2025 15:24

That's quite a stretch. Maddy Bates doesn’t sound anything like masturbates

Of course it does.

Calliopespa · 02/08/2025 19:13

DappledThings · 02/08/2025 19:05

I still don't think that's remotely close enough to be an issue. Without the t sound it just doesn't sound at all like masturbates to me. If Mashta was a name then maybe.

It's possible you have VERY clear diction ...

Skybluepinky · 02/08/2025 19:09

Definitely not classic, it’s a name fish wives use in my area don’t know any child that comes from a classy family with it, there are 4 at preschool I pick up from, so definitely still very common.

DemBonesDemBones · 02/08/2025 19:08

Neither classic nor elegant.

What about Masha Bates?

Yes, I nearly pointed this out myself but decided not to.

What about Masha Bates?

Charabanc · 02/08/2025 11:04

Personally, with your surname, I wouldn't be choosing any M names at all, especially ones that are spelled M-A- and that have S in them.

Trying saying Madison Bates quickly. Or worse, Maddie Bates (so that rules out Madeleine as well).

Yes, I nearly pointed this out myself but decided not to.

Is Alison son of Al/Alistair?

It's a pet name for Alice - originally spelled Alisoun.

thornbury · 02/08/2025 18:45

I taught a Madison in the 2000s (primary). She was hard work but has turned out well. It's an uncommon and fairly masculine name.

TizerorFizz · 02/08/2025 18:44

It’s classic South African or American. Not British. It’s a girl name in both those countries. Madison Keys won the Australian open at tennis this year.

Holdonforsummer · 02/08/2025 18:38

I think it’s a stripper name…..

goudacheese · 02/08/2025 18:27

I really like Maddy but short for Madeleine.

summerskyblue · 02/08/2025 18:03

Nothing classic or elegant about this name.

To me it sounds like an American stripper or Only Fan 'performer' name...

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/08/2025 18:00

Charabanc · 02/08/2025 10:40

Madison is the opposite of "classic and elegant".

This. Fair enough if you like it but it isn’t what you think.

Novanonplus · 02/08/2025 17:41

MN has an obsession with hating anything American. It’s really weird!
MN don’t like anything that is slightly non traditional when it comes to names.
I think MN baby name forum is a weird isolated forum and the demographic is very small.

i like the name, go for it.

WellIquitelikesprouts · 02/08/2025 17:00

It sounds very American but if you’re happy with that and like the name, why not.

Wisenotboring · 02/08/2025 16:28

If you like it, go for it! However, classy and elegant are not words most people will associate with it. I'm a teacher and honestly Madison is one of those names where you don't necessarily come across the loveliest children in the classic and elegant category.

Mistyglade · 02/08/2025 16:19

I really don’t like it but I know a spiteful one who goes by Maddie. Obviously tenuous connections colour our opinions however as pp say an American and a bit trashy imo, sorry.

TheyFuckYouUpYourMamAndDad · 02/08/2025 15:39

It’s not ‘classic and elegant’ by any stretch OP, but it’s a nice name, so use it if you love it.

Also, maybe google the definitions of classic and elegant.
