Thoughts on the name Marnie?

Due my first baby girl in a few months and trying to figure out a name. We are pretty set on Marnie but interested to hear other people's thoughts on it as it's not one I hear or see a lot.

If you don't like it, what other names do you like?

I thought of the film too. I met an adult Marnie a while back and thought it was quite a cool name. Every name could have negative connotations or daft nicknames. It doesn't say sarnie to me because I'd never use that word. If you love it, there's no reason why you shouldn't use it. (And some of the "better" suggestions on here are plain daft.)

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/07/2025 14:03

Love it. I know two - one pre-schooler, one in secondary school.

Agree with others just use a name you know you like & your child can make their own.

FWIW, I'd never use Marnie myself, it's not appealing to me, sorry.

My kids are grown up. I most gravitate to dull 3 syllable grand classics with a billion nn options: eg., Catherine, Lucinda, Alexandra, Sophia, Rebecca. Examples of names that are Not in that mold but also I find attractive : Madison, Clara, Wren, Raquel, Angel, Mary, Somaya, Ingrid, Katrina, Molly...

I used to like Marnie but there’s a kid called Marnie-Rae who lives near me and the way her mum says her name has put me off for life. Sorry!

just Marnie is nice though. Smile

I know 3 Marnies. One in her 50s, one in her 40s, one in her teens.

It’s not my favourite name in the world but all three Marnies are really lovely so I have positive associations.

The only important thing is that you and your partner love it!

ItsameLuigi · 29/07/2025 13:41

I know multiple children with this name and I just think it's quite tacky personally

fuzzwuss · 29/07/2025 13:38

Would remind me of the Hitchcock film

MiddleAgedDread · 29/07/2025 13:37

I'm not a fan, it sounds like a nickname but it's not. Moany Marnie!

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 29/07/2025 13:36

I like it. Also like Margot.

usedtobeaylis · 29/07/2025 13:24

I love it, Marnie and Marion are two names I loved but have relatives with those names so didn't go there.

BoleynMemories13 · 29/07/2025 13:23

It's not to my taste, as it's very trendy. I'm not a fan of ie names in general.

However, if you both like it that's all that matters. You will never find a name which is universally liked.

NightPuffins · 29/07/2025 13:19

Although I like it, to me it’s one of those names that is actually a nickname but has become used as a “main” name. But when I see it I can still only see it as a nickname.
So, yes, it’s a nice choice, but if it was me I would use Marina, Maren, Maria, Margaret, and use Marnie as the nickname.

Pingpongpip · 29/07/2025 13:17

Personally I don’t like it. Marnie reminds me of Sarnie (sandwich) every time I read it.

similar ideas or vibes:
Lani (pronounced Larnie)
Leonie
Marlie / Marlee
Darcie / Darcy
Sadie
Nellie
Aisley

Tia247 · 29/07/2025 13:15

It's a bit harsh sounding to me and makes me think of sarnie (ie sandwich) because there's nothing else that really sounds like it. I don't hate it though and could see it really suiting some people.

Daisymae55 · 29/07/2025 13:13

I love the name Marnie! A bit different but in a good way. I used to go to uni with a Marnie and always liked the name.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 29/07/2025 13:13

I've loved it since I read When Marnie Was There at primary school

CointreauVersial · 29/07/2025 13:13

I know two Marnies (both mid-20s).

It's a pretty name, unusual without being weird.

spanieleyes · 29/07/2025 13:10

Quite like it, it’s certainly unusual, not come across one before except on screen! But it’s not “unique” and is recognisable as a name, which I always find a bonus😊
