I know it's not the most popular but is it unusable?

It was good enough for Joanna Lumley!

I know a a Sapphire, it suits her as she very attractive.

I do like less common names, but not 100% sold on Sapphire. Sapphira I like though.

In my head- I says Saf-fire, but I've also heard it Saffiyah (more similar to Sophia). I'm not sure if I've explained that clearly though. Its possibly a regional pronunciation but might be annoying have 2 ways to say it.

I taught a Sapphira once - lovely girl, lovely name. The 'a' makes all the difference.

I've taught a Sapphire, back in around 2003. She was of African heritage. Fabulous kid, I hope she's doing something wonderful now (aged about 30!)

On principle it should be - after all, if you can have Ruby, Amber, Pearl, Emerald…but realistically I think it’s a bit like Crystal - very pretty but there’s always going to be some people who think “stripper” with Sapphire. I think once I’d heard it on a child, I would just associate it with them iykwik? but yes, on first hearing the name randomly it is a bit exotic dancer. Where as similar Saffron “Saffy”, just has faint hippy vibes instead.

Charlottejbt · 18/07/2025 10:35

I would be worried it sounded like sapphism/ sapphic etc. Luckily school bullies have tiny vocabularies. It is a pretty name though.

I really like Saffie, but I'd go for Saffron over Sapphire. Sapphire sounds a bit like a stripper name to me.

Nailed it

ChocolateGanache · 18/07/2025 10:30

I’d go Saffron
Saphire is a bit chintzy IMO.

Shnuzzbucket · 18/07/2025 10:27

This is how you find out if a name is usable

  1. do you like it - yes, move to 2

  2. does it have a different meaning even though it sounds nice, like Chlamydia - no, move to 3

  3. with your surname is it a stupid one - no, move to 4

  4. what do the initials spell - nothing stupid ? use it

Why not! I like Saff as a shortening. I met a preschool Crystal the other day so 🤷‍♀️
