I know it's not the most popular but is it unusable?

Some gem names are nice (Ruby, Pearl).

Others are strippers (Amber, Crystal, Sapphire).

Nobody knows why.

True

caringcarer · 03/09/2025 14:52

Sapphire and Sapphira both very pretty names. Go for it OP.

I am just thinking of Joanna Lumley with a pudding-bowl haircut and blue eyeshadow. But I also find Saffron a bit embarrassing, as it's Edina's daughter's name in Absolutely Fabulous, and was clearly chosen as a pisstake of a middle-class wannabe hippy name at the time.

Yes, I totally agree with this. Sapphire is a bit 1980s to me. But younger people may not make that connection. If you love it, use it - it's not awful, and I prefer it to Saffron.

I taught a Sapphira once - lovely girl, lovely name. The 'a' makes all the difference.

Totally agree.

There's nothing wrong with the name Sapphire, get off your high horse, if people want to think that its a stripper or trashy name then that's their problem in their little minds. It's the name of a gemstone and if anyone thinks otherwise then they're a problem. I don't like the name Nevaeh and other girls names and boys but I'd never say they were trashy names, people even give their kids made up names now.

Haha. Goodness touched a nerve. I’m not on a high horse and stand by what I said that so what people think and because I have an opinion different to yours it doesn’t make it wrong or mean I have a Lille mind.

Well aware it’s a gemstone but that makes no difference to naming your child Sapphire. Would you name your kid Peridot? Agate? Garnet?

Perhaps have an argument on facts or your opinion without belittling people then maybe I would take your comment seriously. It’s what people without little minds do.

Stripper name or trashy name. What sounds cute and fun for a baby could mean a lifetime of regret for your child. Please don’t.

Isnt that a car?

Haha it does sound like 'zafira' (Vauxhall) I thought that too.
There was actually a car in the early 90s called a 'Ford Sierra Sapphire'!
Also, anyone else now got the Ed sheeran song stuck in their head? 🙈

Emit35x · 02/09/2025 22:49

Well guess my daughter has a stripper name then.... 😂

MaggieBsBoat · 18/08/2025 23:11

The only Sapphire I’ve known was a GP. NOT as stripper, even as a side hustle. Lovely name.

AdayinDecember · 18/08/2025 22:48

The baristas in the last Costa I went to were called Sapphire and Trinity. I thought “what lovely names” - was going to tell them that but I didn’t want to be weird!

ChocolateGanache · 18/08/2025 22:38

Shar270 · 18/07/2025 10:27

I really like Saffie, but I'd go for Saffron over Sapphire. Sapphire sounds a bit like a stripper name to me.

I don't like it I think it's a bit naff.

Hazelmaybe · 18/08/2025 19:42

Sounds a bit hard to pull off. I always think Sapphire , Emerald etc are hard to carry off and you’d need to be beautiful? Or a stripper…

Firebird83 · 18/08/2025 17:05

It’s not my usual style but I think it’s lovely. Sapphira is nice too. I also like Emerald.

hadenoughnows · 18/08/2025 13:29

I also know a Sapphira and think that's close and lovely as a name. I do like Saffron too.

Emanwenym · 18/08/2025 13:23

Joanna Lumley is an actor who was paid to play Sapphire. She's also been Fanny, Marjorie, Gillian, Ermintrude, Meghan, Patsy, ...

KilkennyCats · 18/08/2025 13:18

SaintGermain · 18/07/2025 11:04

It was good enough for Joanna Lumley!

I know a a Sapphire, it suits her as she very attractive.

I don’t get this logic. Surely she’d be just as attractive if she was called something else?!

MadKittenWoman · 18/08/2025 13:16

We had a local trans person called this who turned out to be a paedophile.

midlifeattheoasis · 18/08/2025 13:14

It’s a no from me

Giddykiddy · 18/08/2025 11:53

Sorry - I also think it sounds like a stripper name- Safiya/ Safia is lovely tho - I know a beautiful Safia

Princessfluffy · 18/08/2025 11:46

I do like it but be aware of Sapphic as a close word. It doesn’t read as a stripper name to me.

Emanwenym · 18/08/2025 11:34

People use the names of Ruby, Pearl etc so why not Sapphire.
Because Ruby and Pearl have been in use for a 100 yrs or more.
Why not Garnet, Amethyst, Diamond, Agate or Turquoise?

My daughter is called Sapphire she will be 2 in December, It is a lovely name it wasn't my choice it was her Dad's but I'm glad I named her Sapphire, I've never associated the name with a stripper and people surely ain't going to think that when they see a child with that name (well I should hope not anyway). People use the names of Ruby, Pearl etc so why not Sapphire.
