We’re struggling. Love Morris! We like “posh” boy names. But our friends have used many of the names we love.

Morris is an 85-year-old retired orthodontist from Stanmore.

My grandad was called Morris and he’d be 107 if he was still alive, so it’s definitely been a name for a while… not sure why people are claiming it’s only a surname?! Maybe it’s due a revival!

Whoah, slow down Maurice!

HeCharters · 04/07/2025 22:34

@tinyspiny , your attitude is a bit chevalier.

tinyspiny · 04/07/2025 22:29

My car is called Maurice , but pronounced like the French do but I wouldn’t use it for a human and Morris is worse .

Thank heavens for little girls!

I see what you did there 😉

My grandad was Morris (spelt like that, after his mother's maiden name I believe).
He was born around 1910.

Personally I don't like it.

Ikeameatballs · 04/07/2025 22:03

I don’t like it but that really doesn’t matter, it’s your child.

I do like:

Lionel
Vaughan
Rocco

NormasArse · 04/07/2025 22:00

My grandad was Maurice. He was the loveliest man, and was actually quite ‘posh’. He’d be 104 if he was still alive now.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 04/07/2025 22:00

Since working in a primary school I've got used to seeing all sorts of names, and the kids kind of end up suiting them. Morris as the spelling I just think of as a mis-spelling of Norris as in Norris McWhirter or Maurice.

Will the short name be Mo?

DisforDarkChocolate · 04/07/2025 21:56

I love Morris, and Ralph.

I knew a lovely Morris when my children were young.

Inthesmallclouds · 04/07/2025 21:55

Not good, it’s pretty terrible

ByLilacMember · 04/07/2025 21:16

I really like it! Makes for a cool kid

JillyGiraffe · 04/07/2025 21:12

Morris makes me think of Morrisons, but I assume you’d spell the name Maurice? Personally I’m not keen but I’ve heard so many unusual names lately I actually think it’s fine!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 04/07/2025 20:04

He could grow up to be a joker, or a smoker or a midnight toker

HeCharters · 04/07/2025 19:57

I know a Maurice (Morris not Mo-reece) and a Morris.

SleepWalkingtoSeville · 04/07/2025 19:29

British Leyland dropped the Morris brand almost 40 years ago, because it sounded fuddy-duddy even then.

Given that names tend to peak in popularity in 100-year (ish) cycles, it would make perfect sense that a name which is due a comeback sounded old-fashioned 40 years ago!

WitcheryDivine · 04/07/2025 19:24

I’ve only ever known it as an animal name but if I met a baby Morris I would think it was a good name. I like Mori/Mauri as a nickname.

Interestingly, on this name statistics site, in 2023 there were the same number of babies named Morris and Maurice (13 each)

It is if she gives it to her child. Things change.

She’s aiming for posh though, so she means Maurice, like the novel. Morris isn’t going to give that vibe.

GreenMarigold · 04/07/2025 19:19

Reminds me of the main character in Ideal!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 04/07/2025 19:19

Is your surname Minor?

Needs to be Maurice if you are aiming for posh, Morris is the surname.

I am not crazy about it, but early 20th century names are in, and I met a 16 year old Cyril recently, so what do I know..
