They are the most entertaining things on MN by far. I'm completely addicted. And I don't just take the piss either, I just love em.

Need to get out more....

I love baby name threads but always give an honest opinion - either aw, lovely or urgh yeuch - people don't seem to like hearing the latter

PuppyMonkey · 24/05/2008 19:03

By the way, I really like Zanzibar....

I didn't reply to the Cinderella one - I thought it was someone having fun!
I think that you should have a go at some to save the poor DC from being lumbered with the name!

edam · 23/05/2008 23:34

Oh, there have been some classic baby name queries recently. I can never tell whether the OP is a normally reasonable human being rendered temporarily deranged by p/g hormones OR a normally daft person who happens to be p/g.

Sidge · 23/05/2008 23:27

I admit to loving the baby name threads.

I either read and say 'ooh yes, lovely' to myself, or "NO WAY!! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING???!!!!"

Some of the suggestions should go up in court as criminal offences.

Janni · 23/05/2008 21:14

Hormonal shmormonal. What an excuse! If you're that crazy you shouldn't be allowed to name a poor innocent child.

You need those of us who are no longer pregnant to set you straight.

And was the recent Cinderella thread genuine??

ByTheSea · 23/05/2008 21:08

I lurk on these threads and find them incredibly entertaining too. I love when one of mine's name is mentioned as a favourite too, which isn't very often as they're not terribly common whilst not being unheard of.

SylvieBruno · 23/05/2008 21:04

My new screen name is the name I would have called my dd if she'd been a boy and the name I would have called my ds if he'd been a girl. Got that?

That's how much I like names. I know it's weird, but it's a free hobby.

lastboxoftampons · 23/05/2008 18:02

Yes, maybemaybee I agree. But I am taken aback a bit when I'm reading a post and someone says something along the lines of "You're stupid for naming your child that" Maybe I'm missing an inside joke or something, but there was a post that said something like 'There's millions. Get over yourself' when someone asked for a girl's name that didn't end in A or Y. I just thought what the hell's that about????

maybemaybee · 23/05/2008 17:41

i would agree there teuch, if they do both agree then what is the point. Unfortunately, people like me have sods for partners who just want to be awkward and i need to arm myself with lots of people saying yes maybemaybee your names are great, his are rubbish

Teuch · 23/05/2008 17:36

But see, that's where the problem lies, I think...

People give honest opinions, and others take it as 'mean'.

Sometimes people are looking for variations, checking spelling, gauging popularity, etc.

Imust say, that when someone just posts 'I like it, DP likes it, what do you think?' I just think 'FFS - if you both like it, don't worry what other people think'!!!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 23/05/2008 17:36

'preggers' pmsl

PortBlacksandResident · 23/05/2008 17:35

My DS1 has a slightly unusual name. My DS2 has a very unusual name (in this country anyway). I love to lurk to see if either ever come up.

DS2s hasn't yet .

maybemaybee · 23/05/2008 17:31

raging hormone pregnant woman goes to make coffee and await the repercussions of her wonderful articulate post (minus spelling mistakes)

maybemaybee · 23/05/2008 17:29

Last box of tampons your post is well put, but if i cared about this thread i would say it more like this:

i dont get why there is a bunch of folk in the baby name forum that are out and out nasty people, whom have nothing better to do but go about being nasty people and generally ruining threads. the forum name is, wait for it, BABY NAMES, therefore, as truly unbelieviable and ridiculous as it surely is, people post asking for opinions on baby names! how uttery appaling of them!

If i ask what people think of the name zanzebar, i actually dont want idiots saying one word answer: adam. WTF? why? did i ask you to give me names? no..... honestly the ones that post in this forum like that are really pathetic, not the ones whom ask for an opinion on names. They just know us poor pregnant women are easy targets because of our raging hormones and clearly get some pleasure out of winding up preggers women

There. i said it on behalf of all the people that find the above very irriating. let the flaming begin!

lastboxoftampons · 23/05/2008 17:20

I dont' necessarily scoff at the name threads - I think you can get some great ideas and people are genuinely interested in helping others. I guess I just don't understand why people have to be so blatantly mean about giving their opinion.

Careful DWP...there will be someone out there thinking 'hmm Evangelica, that's got a lovely ring to it'.

3andnomore · 23/05/2008 16:41

well, I cared...is that a problem for you?
Maybe if I had my Babies in Germany and would live there I wouldn't have felt the need too, but well, fashion of names is different in Germany and Marvin is a perfectly acceptable name for a little boy, but in England people would probably laugh in your face and think you are crazy...
as it happens though, people think that about us anyway, I think, lol...

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 23/05/2008 16:39

pmsl Lynette, funniest flounce ever

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 23/05/2008 16:38

Who cares how people gauge the name of your child. Just call them whatever you bloody well like, surely?

LynetteScavo · 23/05/2008 16:38

TheDWP...you were funny. It's jsut that people on baby name threads are lacking in humour...possibly PG hormones.

Oh, and it's evening, by the way!

3andnomore · 23/05/2008 16:35

I love Baby name threads
When naming Babies was still an issue for us, it helped me "gauge" how a name is perceived by others and it made me aware of possible teasingissues, etc...!
In the end we went along wiht what we liked, but some names were put aside after realising what other people think...forinstance ys was almost called Frederic, but people automatically started saying how they like/ dislike the name Freddy...and because I hate the shortened version, we thought better then to call our child Frederic...!
And now I just love giving my opinion on any names thrown about, etc....!
As for people who don't "get it"...well..I always think, don't read/post then, lol...but hohum

VictorianSqualor · 23/05/2008 16:33

They're great.
I now have a standard reply.

OP:do you like
VS:Nope use Rufus/Clara.

AbbeyA · 23/05/2008 16:19

I think that I am in the same group as you Tommy.
I wouldn't ask but there wouldn't be a lot of point as everyone would say 'boring'.
It may help if someone wants something outlandish, if everyone is anti they may think twice.
