What do people think of Marnie?

OP posts:

Love it. Know one

Loved it since I read this book at primary school:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_Marnie_Was_There_(novel)

Oooh! Long lost memory unlocked with that!

Shenmen · 17/06/2025 22:50

I know an incredibly cool and lovely one.

Andoutcomethewolves · 17/06/2025 22:38

I don't know why people are saying it's chavvy?? My friend Marnie is as upper middle class as you can get!

But PP mentioned someone in Geordie Shore with the name so maybe it's due to that (I've never watched it and I'm sure many haven't! Plus I very much doubt it'll still be a thing when baby Marnie is at school...)

Pinty · 17/06/2025 22:30

I like it. It's unusual but it's a recognisable name.

whatcoulditbee · 17/06/2025 22:28

I'm not sure why but it gives off very chavvy vibes to me, which therefore makes me really dislike it.

Judging by the amount of people who have replied saying they like it, it must just be me who thinks that though!

Peggysue14 · 17/06/2025 22:21

Love it.

Andoutcomethewolves · 17/06/2025 22:17

I like it. I have a good friend adult Marnie so that may make me a wee bit biased!

I like Marcie too (same as above, good friend with that name!)

Pipsquiggle · 17/06/2025 22:17

Also I do think how it sounds with a surname is important

Marnie Blarney - awful

Marnie McDonald - much better

Pipsquiggle · 17/06/2025 22:14

No. But why would you care what I think?

eatsleeplaugh · 17/06/2025 22:12

I love the name Marnie, that's what I named my daughter of I had one 💜

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/06/2025 22:06

Lovely name. I know a couple. Cool, pretty, not too common.

HopscotchBanana · 17/06/2025 22:00

Horrendous.

It's a has been clothes brand.

Siblings would be Mercedes and Mackenzie.

Birdsinginginthetrees · 17/06/2025 21:56

I like it and know a nice one in real life. I know a couple of people have suggested Marina but that just reminds me of middle class middle aged woman.

Ladylay · 17/06/2025 21:53

Ugh…irrationally hate it. Might have regional accent connotations for me maybe.

JasmineTea11 · 17/06/2025 21:24

That was going to be our name for last baby if a girl. Love it. So cool, but not trying too hard.

Enko · 17/06/2025 21:08

Love Marnie. And the 2 I have known were great too

DemonsandMosquitoes · 17/06/2025 20:21

Wet

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/06/2025 20:00

NO

ShrimpBoil · 17/06/2025 19:56

Love it!

Arran2024 · 17/06/2025 19:52

AI says it's the 119th most popular name for girls atm.

TheBlackfingernail · 17/06/2025 19:36

I don't really like it because it seems a very meh sort of name to me. Kind of like it should be short for something but isn't.

It's a name that lacks any kind of distinctiveness, history or significance to me. I always think it is nice to name children for a reason they can appreciate eg. after a grandparent and Marnie seems bland, lacking any connection to anything of substance and blah.

Like others my first thought would be the Hitchcock film and that chavvy woman out of some reality TV show.

Hard no from me. There are so many classical, unusual and pretty names to choose from.

yousillygoose · 17/06/2025 19:31

Love Marnie! It was one of my top choices for my daughter. If I’d had another girl, she’d have definitely been a Marnie.

cheapskatemum · 17/06/2025 19:29

I like it. I also like Marina and Marianne with Marnie as a nickname.
