Please help understanding how names Mark and Conrad feel for a boy.

It was very hopeful to hear the opinions on the slavic names. Now I have two more in my mind but something doesn’t feel right about them, although I like how Conrad fits with the last name which starts with Ca… and has a soft feeling… is it too outdated? And what could be a nickname for that? Thank you

@Tina294 Connor and Conor were extremely popular in the 1990s so seem a bit dated, but I quite like them.

@Enko ,Babies called Conrad in England & Wales since 1996. It doesn't seem to get used much. 101 registered in 2006, 20 in 2023.

Not really, This chart is from ukbabynames. Its actually become more popular in the last 20 years. I cant get the national atatsitics to download on my phone so cant quote an exact number but I seem to recall it being in the 600.

They both sound quite dated to me, but it depends how important that is to you? They’re not dated in a bad way, they’re classics that aren’t currently popular.

Marcus probably feels more current than Mark, but as Matthew is being revived don’t see why Mark can’t be.

Both of these are nice.

Don’t like Conrad, it’s just a slightly cheesy surname name like Austin

Mark is a timeless classic. I’m not keen on Conrad, I think the name will date quickly.

Ds is Conrad so obviously I love the name. I like the its well know but not common part.
My Conrad likes his name. And. In his early 20s have only met 1 other (dad of a friend)

Mark to me is late 50s early.60s

It was much more popular in the 70s and 80s.

I prefer Marcus and Connor, the only Conrad I know is in his 80's and all the Marks I know were born in the 70's.

I like Conrad, and not sure I’ve ever actually met one. I probably have at some point in my 35 years, but not a very used name, so it doesn’t actually sound dated to me.
Mark on the other hand sounds dated, very overused, and rather dull. Marcus is better.

I would go with Marcus rather than Mark. He can shorten it to Marc if he doesn't like it once he is old enough to have an opinion. Not a fan of Conrad.

I like Mark - it’s simple and unfussy. The only Conrad I’ve ever met was an acquaintance of my great-aunt, and he was known as Connie, which he carried off, on account of being a posh old solicitor.

I knew one Conrad, he was Polish.
I've known a lot of Marks.
I quite like both names but Mark is my favourite. It is quite unusual a boy these days which I think is a good - there won't be a lot of little Marks in class!

Mark sounds a little dated but more boring for lack of a better word (apologies to all Marks)

My 10 year old has a friend called Mark (yes he’s Slavic). It’s just his name, no thoughts really, once you hear it more than a couple of times it’s just a name. I also know a young David, Derek and 2 young Desmonds.

Conrad is pretty cool. Conrad Carter for example - v cool.

Mark is a really solid good name.
Like David, Peter and Richard.

Conrad is unusual and seems not as friendly.
I'm not fond of Con nor Constantine either.

Not a fan of Mark at all. Just a really harsh sound to me. I do like some dated names -Timothy, Anthony, Jonathan etc but never liked Mark.
Conrad is an interesting name, think it's quite good actually. Something international and suave about it.

They're totally different styles, to me.

In England, Mark would be viewed as a biblical classic. Quite dated now but still a few young ones about (mainly Eastern European in my experience). It's a popular name here which everyone is familiar with, although most in this country are in their 30s-60s as that's when it was at it's height of popularity.

I don't think Conrad has ever been popular here. I'm really not keen. It's quite a harsh sound. I really can't imagine a baby Conrad. I guess the obvious short form would be Con, same as Connor, but I'm still not keen.

Mine is known as Roo in the immediate family. As we used to call him Conradskiroo got shorteend to Roo or Rooboy.

In outer circles he has never had a nm it was one of my draws to the name as I am not fond of shortenings. (Unusual where I grew up)

Absolutely nothing wrong with Mark, a nit dull perhaps but a good, classic biblical name. Conrad is just awful

There isn’t any really as Connie is too feminine and Con isn’t nice. Conrad is likely a nickname- free name just like Mark - unless you go down the initials route like “CJ” (Conrad Joseph for example).

Mark is lovely, classic & understated. But then I like John, David & Peter. Lovely names. Conrad is a bit try hard. It's also got con in it so it sounds like a dodgy geezer's name, to me.

Don’t know any young Conrad’s- but I do know a young Mark (late teens). His name was chosen precisely because it is quite international/ the same in many languages (he is mixed British/East Asian). As far as I know he likes his name and has never had any issues with it.

I personally consider Mark a classic name rather than dated- very similar to Matthew, Luke and John (the other Gospels) in that there are always a few about of different ages even if the names rise and fall in fashion.

Conrad is less my personal taste, but I can’t see anything wrong with it (no obvious teasing, spelling or pronunciation issues etc). And I love alliterative names as I think they are very memorable, so I can see why you’re tempted!
