Cosmo as a baby name?

Having a baby boy. Is Cosmo cool or too much? Our surname begins with a ā€œCā€ too.

Cosmo is a great name - cool, classic and not overused.

People make/become their names, not the other way around.

Cosmo is a perfectly solid name although it definitely gives very posh vibes in the UK.

Cosimo, in Italy, sounds a bit different, to my ears you might expect an English equivalent to be something like… Francis, Hugh, Edmund, thst sort of name: uncommon, probably not working class and sort of solid more than anything else.

Personally I’d go with the Italian spelling: Cosimo. Cosmo to me is quite an eccentric name, not bad at all, but it has a very definite vibe of posh and could be hard to carry off depending on social milieu. I have a regular work contact called Cosmo, he is really very pleasant but undeniably quite posh.

Edited

I think I agree with you about Cosimo over Cosmo.

It also avoids all the cocktail etc vibes.

That's interesting your take on the different vibe between UK and Italy. I don't know Italy well enough to have understood that but it makes sense.

Nigella chose it

Wasn't that Cosima? For a daughter?

Screams of desperation and new money.

I really don't think the new money thing is fair. It's a pretty old European name. In fact, Medici money is some of the oldest serious money that has been.

Calliopespa · 19/08/2026 22:48

I think it's fine OP.

It's an old name, so not really one I think of as "cool."

ETA my first thought is always Cosimo di Medici, who, while remarkable in some ways, doesn't really tick the cool box! I think it's just a variant of that isn't it?

I wanted our cat to be called Cosmo. DH vetoed it. Cat has Cosmo as a middle name.

I love this post! Only on MN do DH's veto cat names, and cats have middle names!

SnowFrogJelly · 19/08/2026 22:44

I like it

Giraffehaver · 19/08/2026 22:31

My sil had a very grumpy Jack Russell called Cosmo who I absolutely adored so I'm a fan!

Maddy70 · 17/08/2026 23:22

A friend called their child Cosmo. I thought it was awful at the time tbh but now it really suits him and I think it's lovely

reformNotReform · 17/08/2026 23:00

There was an Archbishop, Cosmo Lang

bbb83 · 17/08/2026 22:59

I’m not sure if you’re aware but both the magazine and cocktail refer to a shortened version of the very different word ā€˜cosmopolitan’. Cosmo as a name however means something quite different and has been used in the UK since the late 1700ā€˜s. Whilst not common, I’m not sure anything should be locked until it’s understood.āœŒļø

Can you afford to send little Cosmo to a private school?

Because round our way you'd get seriously bullied for being a posh git with a name like that in any of the state schools.

That's really sad. My kid(s) have slighty unusual names amd go(went) to a rough ass state school. They have never been bullied about their names and they are certainly not the only ones with unusual or heaven forbid - forgien names 🤯

Cosmo was on my list OP, I love it.

I love Singin’ In The Rain so Cosmo has nothing but happy associations for me. ā€œMoses Supposesā€¦ā€ etc

My daughter has a friend called Cosmo and he's lovely, as are his family. They are both at state school and there has been no bullying about it.

CrushingOnRubies · 03/06/2025 13:56

I actually quite like it.

@SnowFrogJelly , she didn't.

You’re right — her daughter is Cosima, (and apparently used to be known as Mimi. A friend of mine taught her years back.) Much nicer than Cosmo.

It has a really cool sound - and would make a fab middle name or even a nickname for a boy who adored everything to do with Space (and seemingly a lot of young boys go through a Space phase, if it’s not Dino’s or Vehicles).

But I think as a first name it’s a bit limiting for him unless you somehow know he’s going to be arty, preferably always live in a big multicultural city, have a more UC social set etc. I personally tend to sway towards names which sound like they could fit in on both a building site and a judge’s chambers for an easier life and I’m not sure Cosmo fits that brief.

Theoldholeyjumper · 02/06/2025 22:03

It immediately makes me think of the character from Fairly Odd Parents so it would be a no from me because of that.

I don’t think it sounds remotely posh though and I do really like Cosimo as PPs have suggested, although I can’t imagine it flowing well with any typically british surnames so that might be something to consider if that’s the case for you

Gattopard · 02/06/2025 17:54

People might find a very posh sounding name pretentious. They might think if someone is trying very hard to seem posh that this is because they look down on less posh people or that they desperately want to social climb. Or they might just think they wouldn’t fit in with such a posh person. Stuff like that. These are not my personal views though; I like the name.

Interesting, thanks! A lot of assumptions being made there…. Hopefully most people are more open minded (and no, i don’t have a Cosmo!)

Gattopard · 02/06/2025 17:54

Redflamingos · 02/06/2025 15:30

Why might it be negative?

I’m genuinely intrigued, as I’m not from the UK originally and personally would never have any negative thoughts against any child whose parents chose ā€˜posh’ names for them?
