You lost me at her journey through school.

Rosiejovi · 30/05/2025 20:31

I have a 19 year old Evelyn (pronounced Ev-lyn) she loves it, I love it and we haven't encountered any others on her journey through school.

I like it, but if you are going to be annoyed by people using different pronunciations it's not the name for you. Could be Ev-lyn, Eve-lyn or Ever-lyn

Agree with this. I work with an Evelyn. Everyone pronounces it differently. Would drive me mad.

AnneMarieW · 30/05/2025 19:51

Lovely in principle - its just a shame it’s become so trendy over the last 20 years or so (it began to rise rapidly in popularity after it was used in The Mummy and Pearl Harbour films for the main characters).

It also has the problem of multiple pronunciations- most younger people use the American 3 syllable one now (like in the films); but many older Brits still defer to 2 syllable “Eve- lyn” or “Ev-lyn”. My Great-gran was an “Eve-lyn” and I’d love to use the name but its trendiness and multiple pronunciations puts me off a bit. I’m considering Eve instead for simplicity (her nn was Eve).

KayEmAy · 30/05/2025 18:09

Love Evie, not keen on Evelyn

Imenti · 30/05/2025 18:05

Love it, but am biased as it was my Grandma's name, my daughter has it as her middle name. We pronounce it Eve-lyn, same as my Grandma did xx

WildCherryBlossom · 30/05/2025 17:06

I love it but the ambiguity of pronunciation would put me off using it as a first name.

monktasmic · 30/05/2025 17:04

its really massively popular here and has been for almost 20 years. I know multiples of all the Evie /Evelyn\ Eve / Eva /Ava / Ivy / Ada so I wouldn’t personally.

Wheech · 30/05/2025 16:41

I think it's beautiful. Here it would possibly be pronounced Eve-lyn or Eveh-lyn so there might be occasional confusion from people on that front. I've never heard it pronounced with an 'r' and am imagining that to be either a pirate or a Somerset accent.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 30/05/2025 16:36

Boring

Username2151 · 30/05/2025 15:59

I think it's a lovely name, and as people like to consider possible nicknames I think it's fairly versatile.
Eve, Evie, Ev, Lyn.
Bear in mind it is pronounced differently in different places.
I.E Ev-uh-Lyn instead of Eve-Lyn., not that that matters because both sound very pretty.

WtafIsThat · 30/05/2025 14:58

I don’t like it personally, however…

Boring.

Soooo many Evies, please no more Evies!

Els1e · 30/05/2025 14:54

I like it and only know 1.

Fatrosrhun · 30/05/2025 14:53

I like it. I didn’t realise it was so popular. You could change it slightly and use the Italian version - Evelina.

Evvyjb · 30/05/2025 14:53

As an Evelyn...

  • love my name, wish my parents had been brave enough to go for the Irish
  • it's a family name. There are a lot of us.
  • get EVE lyn all the time, but only takes a couple of corrections
  • go by Ev for short

My daughter is Aoife.

PanderBare · 30/05/2025 14:51

I don't like it.

Dinosaurshoebox · 30/05/2025 14:45

Like Evie? Peppa pigs new sister?

Don't do that to a kid.

RightOnTheEdge · 30/05/2025 14:42

My neighbour has a little girl called Evelyn, they say it like Ever-lyn.
I like the name.

DappledThings · 30/05/2025 14:41

Redflamingos · 30/05/2025 14:39

It can’t be that uncommon then!

It could be. You could choose a name that is in the bottom 1000 with only 3 born the same year but by a huge coincidence 1 of the others is in the same school. Name itself is still uncommon

WayneEyre · 30/05/2025 14:40

It's fine

Redflamingos · 30/05/2025 14:39

Stripyzebrabra · 30/05/2025 14:20

Its nice but it seems to be the most popular name in both of my dcs schools (they both know multiples).

That said, my youngest has an uncommon name and there is another one in her year so you can't win!

It can’t be that uncommon then!

Icewithmyslice · 30/05/2025 14:39

So, so many in my DCs classes at school! DC3 has 4 in his class, all 4 are Evelyn’s but 2 go by Evie. DC2 has 2 in her class and DC1 has 1 in his class and 2 in his hobby class.

Redflamingos · 30/05/2025 14:38

Very popular and starting to feel dated. Especially the short form Evie

laughingnow · 30/05/2025 14:38

Has a nice ring to it, better for a girl than a boy for some reason
