Ted for a boy?

DF and I had decided that if our new baby is a boy we would call him Thomas but on Sunday we were chatting and got to talking about Theodore.

Now I love Theo and did also for DS but DF felt that the meaning was not good. Theodore means god's gift so Theo means "God".

If we went for this he would call the baby Ted or Teddy, I quite like it and there is always the option of him being called Theo if he grows out of being a Teddy.

What do others think?

My DS is Elijah, generally known as Eli, which also means 'God' on its own. Never really thought about it as it only stands for Elijah iyswim. Maybe wouldn't have named him 'Eli' as his full name, but then the meaning of names is very important to DH and I.

Polyxene · 14/06/2008 00:08

Our son is Teddy or sometimes Ted, short for Edward, so obviously I like that!

Theodore was also on our short list though, and again would have been called Ted/Teddy. I agree about the meaning of Theodore being very nice, and that shortening it to just 'God' didn't feel quite right, although really as the short-form just stands for the whole name, I don't think you need to worry about that too much.

I prefer Ed

Astrophe · 13/06/2008 17:15

Ted is one of the best names ! In this country I think that it is more usually a short form of Edward; most of the Theodore Teds I know are American. I like Theo too, but not so keen on Theodore. I also like Edward and Edmund. My great-uncle was calleld Edmund but always known as Ted. I do know a little Ted who is a Theodore and another who is an Edward; I also know a Ned who is just Ned and and Edward who is just Edward.

Botbot · 13/06/2008 09:35

Theodore/Ted is what I'll be calling a boy if I ever have one, so I approve!

bikerunski · 13/06/2008 09:19

Really like Ted. Would use it except we already have a cat called Eddie/Teddy/Ted/EDWARD!!!!!!

We coudln't decided whether to register him at the vet's in my or DH's surname (i didn't change my name until recently). The vet has a great sense of humour and has him registered as Edward Gray-Catt.

ButterflyMcQueen · 12/06/2008 22:58

love ted but think it should be Teddy Edward

LynetteScavo · 12/06/2008 22:55

The most georgus little boy I've ever known (apart from my own!) was Theodore, shortened to Ted. DD would have been Ted, it's so lovely.

WinkyWinkola · 12/06/2008 22:54

Great name!

Carolcupcake, my DS is Theodore. And he's Ted/Teddy now as a baby/child.

When he's PM, he'll be Theodore of course.

Does Theo really mean 'God'? I've not heard of that.

WillburyNibbleQC · 12/06/2008 22:54

I'm so pleased the response to Ted had been positive, this is the name I've picked too!

Mine is short for Edward though!

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 20/05/2008 20:36

I believe that teddy bears are named after Theodore Roosevelt, so Ted as a diminutive for Theodore has long precedent.

3madboys · 20/05/2008 19:10

i have a theodore, (my ds1 who is 8) tjere arent many of them about, he is the only one of his age we know ( i know two toddlers with it) we call him theo, or "the 'o' man" or when he is being cute and lovely he got called theodorable, but at 8 he doesnt like that one any more...

nooka · 20/05/2008 19:05

We have an Edmund, an Edwin, a Theo and a Thomas in our family. Also a Ned who may or may not be an Edward. All very nice names.

seeker · 20/05/2008 18:55

Ted is short for Edward. Well, it was in my Uncle Ted's case. Go for Edward and shorten it to Ted.

southeastastra · 20/05/2008 18:53

WinkyWinkola · 20/05/2008 17:33

Fantastic name. It's my DS's name, Theodore. We call him Ted and he has the choice of Theo or Theodore for when he's Prime Minister.

funnypeculiar · 20/05/2008 17:31

Love both Ted & Theo
But then I love Thomas too
Did that help?
