My granny was Ruby!

smallstitch · 14/05/2025 21:47

I know way too many dogs called Ruby

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 14/05/2025 21:03

It's one of the small potatoes and they are cracking.

MintChocCat · 14/05/2025 20:52

It's my dachshund's name!

DrFoxtrot · 14/05/2025 20:52

I’m not keen as I don’t like the ‘oob’ sound.

Isthisreasonable · 14/05/2025 19:58

To people of my generation Ruby always makes you think of Ruby in Upstairs Downstairs

What do people think of the name Ruby?
Firsttimebabymummy · 14/05/2025 19:53

Not keen, sorry. But I think that is as we have a lot of pets in our friend circle called Ruby! Dogs/horses/parrots

Mollysocks · 14/05/2025 19:25

I love it, but then my best friend has a Ruby and she’s the most beautiful, kind girl I know, so I’m biased! I think it works well as a child and adults name, not many feel right for both.

savethatkitty · 14/05/2025 19:17

Hate it. Sorry.

Its a nice name, in theory. But I have a relative named Ruby, nicknamed "Rubes" (awful!)

Spinachpastapicker · 14/05/2025 18:40

I think it’s a pretty timeless classic. I like it.

It was quite popular in my area around 15-20 years ago, I know at least 3 teen Ruby’s but havent heard of any recently. The “old lady” name that’s trending around here instead is Elsie, which is not as nice in my opinion as Ruby.

The Kaiser Chiefs song is a good singalong.

(Pearl - no! Awful. Pearl necklace is a given for the bullies).

Moreteaandchocolate · 14/05/2025 18:35

Love it! I see it as “tried and tested” rather than dated - it peaked in popularity a while ago now but has stood the test of time and is still used enough to make it feel it fits with modern trends, but also not so popular that it’s everywhere. Kind of like Chloe.

ridl14 · 14/05/2025 17:23

Hate it 😬 very working class IME. Pearl though!

Pearl is awful.

thisisfrommathilda · 14/05/2025 17:26

I know about 12 Ruby's. Very very common name here.

ridl14 · 14/05/2025 17:23

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 14/05/2025 17:22

Gorgeous and I haven’t met anyone called Ruby in my kids school so not to popular…

BoleynMemories13 · 14/05/2025 17:19

Lovely name

Loopylalalou · 14/05/2025 17:11

Sorry, but the only Ruby’s I’ve known are labradors.

Love the name but there are lots of them.

Reddelilah · 14/05/2025 15:11

I also find it dull from overuse. It feels like it was very popular a few years ago?

BrightLightTonight · 14/05/2025 15:11

Love it - that was why I called my dog Ruby.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 14/05/2025 15:10

Sorry it just says ‘curry’ to me

SpringGreenOnion · 14/05/2025 15:08

I love it as I think it’s very old fashioned but in a good way.

DramaAlpaca · 14/05/2025 15:05

I think it's lovely.

user3879208717 · 14/05/2025 14:51

One of my relatives was Ruby, born about 1920. She was the loveliest lady, so the name has good associations for me. Only come across one or two young ones, so don’t think its over used.
