I work with a Ruby, her nickname is rubes, as in rhymes with pubes. 😳

Raspberrymoon49 · 20/05/2025 21:50

Lovely name but v v popular

Waitingfordoggo · 20/05/2025 21:14

It’s a lovely name. There are quite a lot of them about, but that wouldn’t bother me.

My DD has a name that has been in the top ten for about 20 years, and at number one several times (probably easy to guess from that info!) but it’s never been a problem. There are several possible nicknames, and it was never an issue at school- there were actually surprisingly few in her school at the same time as her, and she hasn’t had another one within her friendship group. She likes her name. If you love Ruby, use it.

Agirlandherdog · 20/05/2025 21:02

Lovely name. Would have been my daughters name but DH didn't like it.

biggreenapple24 · 20/05/2025 20:56

It’s a lovely name, but there are an awful lot of dogs called Ruby. I wouldn’t consider it for a human these days

MerryPortas · 20/05/2025 20:55

A mix of fuddy duddy and brash - I just don’t like it.

I don't know any little Ruby's and think it's very sweet. Quite a fiesty name in my mind

My niece is Ruby and yes, she is feisty. All her sisters are jewel names so it works. I think it's a great name.

PorgyandBess · 20/05/2025 20:35

I’m afraid I think it’s chavvy, like Jade and Amber.

Lins77 · 20/05/2025 20:34

I like it but I can't hear it without singing Ruby Ruby Ruby Rubyyyyy either out loud or inside my head 😄

Enko · 20/05/2025 20:31

I don't like it never have.

backslashruby · 20/05/2025 20:30

Hmmmmmmmmmmm...............................

Rickeeeeeeeeee · 20/05/2025 20:29

I know a few (secondary school age) and I like the name in principle, but the ones I know are not particularly nice people so I have negative connotations

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 20/05/2025 20:25

I know 3 Rubys - all 20-25, and I don't dislike the name, but I wouldn't call my new little girl Ruby. I can't say why. A cross between going for a Ruby Murray (curry,) Ruby by the Kaister Chiefs, and I'm just not a massive fan of the name for a little girl now. Can't articulate why sorry @RA1988

I don't know one single person who would class it as downmarket though, like the above poster! ^ It's really not.

.

mrsm43s · 20/05/2025 20:18

I think it's become a bit down market. It was very popular a few years ago

To people of my generation Ruby always makes you think of Ruby in Upstairs Downstairs

I must be your generation as that was my first thought. I also know lots of dogs called Ruby and a friend had cats called Ruby and Pearl.

Daffodilsarefading · 20/05/2025 20:09

Haven’t heard anyone called Ruby in ages.

foreverblowingbubbless · 20/05/2025 20:07

Ruby on Corrie !

Joolsin · 20/05/2025 20:04

I love it. Would have been DS23's name if he had been a girl. I know two now, one is 9 and the other 6.

okydokethen · 20/05/2025 20:01

Think it’s a great name

AmiablePedant · 20/05/2025 19:38

Indelibly, for certain oldies, associated with the Kenny Rogers song ......

You've painted up your lips and rolled and curled your tinted hair
Ruby, are you contemplating going out somewhere?
The shadow on the wall tells me the sun is going down
Oh, Ruby
Don't take your love to town

mygrandchildrenrock · 16/05/2025 20:20

It’s a beautiful name and I know children from 3-18 called Ruby, but not loads of them.

AcrobaticCardigan · 16/05/2025 20:18

Love it! Pretty & v cool!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 16/05/2025 20:16

Id never use it but i don't dislike it on other children

pictoosh · 16/05/2025 20:15

Lovely name...but it's overused if that's an issue for you. If not, very nice.

mum1345 · 16/05/2025 20:13

Beautiful name! Love it 🥰
