I love Emmett I think it's classic but uncommon, and pronounced nicely in many different languages:)

I know a couple of them in Ireland where it’s more often spelt Emmet after the patriot Robert Emmet. It’s not as popular now as it once was though,

Yes. It has patriotic connotations in Ireland which are entirely removed from the emmets and grockles tourist connotations it has in England, though. Mind you, I can't remember the last time I came across an Irish Emmet/t either.

Notyourfaultbutmine · 12/05/2025 14:52

I love it. For me it does bring to mind Emmett Till so it depends if that puts you off.
Emerson is similar-ish.

Brilliant country store https://www.emmettandstone.co.uk/

That's near me, and it's a shooting shop.
My thought was 'grockles and emmets'.

I wouldn't use it as a boy's name.

madgreenlemons · 12/05/2025 13:02

I think it’s a lovely name. I agree with some others you will want to do your research on Emmett Till as that is an infamous and deeply tragic story in the US. But not to nec stop you using it- just to be aware

IkeaMeatballGravy · 12/05/2025 12:57

When I think of Emmett, I think of tourists, Mrs Bucket and the Lego movie. Sorry!

You may not care what it would mean to Americans, but Emmett Till will come to mind for them, I think - and it's a sad story.

I'm British and Emmett Till was the first thing that popped into my head too.

bnmshortcut · 12/05/2025 12:53

GORGEOUS! One of my favourite ever boys names

Character in Hyacinth Bucket. Where I am in the south west tourists are referred to as grockles not Emmett's.

Thank you! Grockles become emmets when you cross the Tamar

Dilbertian · 11/05/2025 19:09

I like it. It's a Bible name that means 'truth'. Solid. Classic, yet unusual.

Never heard of any of the not-so-good connotations that posters are giving for Emmett.

Cecilly · 11/05/2025 18:55

I like it!

Blondiney · 11/05/2025 17:34

Bit limp of wrist.

Disappointedneighbour · 11/05/2025 17:27

I'm not that keen. It doesn't sound like a solid enough name to me. Something a bit weak sounding about it.

ChiliFiend · 11/05/2025 17:24

SoeurFayre · 11/05/2025 17:05

In Ireland, i know two Emmet's. One is a teenager and the other in early 20's. Both lovely boys so I think it's a great name: Strong and cool.

I've never heard either of them having it shortened.

Bananalanacake · 11/05/2025 17:03

I think of Hyacinth Bucket's neighbour who used to be in Hi De Hi but can't remember which chacracter,

MoistVonL · 11/05/2025 17:01

M. Emmet Walsh. Great character actor.

Yes, grockles in Devon and emmets in Cornwall. Made me think of Keeping Up Appearances too. Also the prof in Back To The Future?

mumonthehill · 11/05/2025 16:59

I love it and a character in the novel A Room With a View. How i do agree shortening it would be tricky.

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/05/2025 16:56

I don’t mind it but I don’t like the nn Em / Emmy as they sound girly. I prefer Bennett / Beckett / Everett as they are nicely shortened to Ben / Beck / Ev, which are cool nn’s.

TheReturnOfFeathersMcGraw · 11/05/2025 16:12

My first thought was the lego movie. Its a nice name though!

Acc0untant · 11/05/2025 15:57

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/05/2025 15:20

I'm thinking Dr Emmett Brown in Back to the Future.

Me too! But it's not a bad connotation at least.
