Emily, Matilda or Imogen?

Hi,

We are due DC2 (who looks to be a girl) in July and struggling to decide on a name choice. The three we keep coming back to are Emily, Matilda and Imogen. What are your thoughts? I'm wondering if I haven't thought of something related to one of them that might influence us towards/away from them or if I'll find myself subconsciously hoping one will win the poll Grin DS is Jacob.

Thanks

Thanks all. It looks like Imogen is the most popular overall, which was my suggestion but DH is a bit more mixed on. I think my only concern is pronunciation- I naturally pronounce it as “Imm-uh-jin” but I don’t know whether others would pronounce the last syllable more as ‘jen’, if that makes sense (probably not!).

I really love Imogen

48mumof6 · 10/05/2025 00:38

I have an Emily and an Imogen, love Matilda as well would have been in the running if I have had another girl. 💖

DurdleSnore · 10/05/2025 00:29

Imogen or Matilda, both were on my list but vetoed by DH. Emily feels a little dull to me but can’t put my finger on why as it’s a perfectly nice name. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.

Ellmau · 09/05/2025 22:02

I like Imogen the best. Matilda always feels a bit matronly to me, and Emily is just a bit bland.

babymummy96 · 09/05/2025 22:01

I have an Imogen and I bloody love it!

Justgoingforaweeliedown · 09/05/2025 22:00

All three are lovely and go well with Jacob but Imogen is my favourite. I also like Matilda but not sure if I can picture an adult Matilda, possibly because the image of Matilda in my head is based in the Roald Dahl adaptation of the book. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them though.

I think Imogen . Matilda and especially Emily are very popular names.

ThePoliteLion · 09/05/2025 21:12

Another vote for Imogen!

(DD was in a class with three Matildas)

17caterpillars1mouse · 09/05/2025 21:12

I like Imogen best, it's slightly less popular and I like Immie

Matilda is nice but everywhere in my area and I'm not keen of Tilly

Emily is nice enough too, they are all pretty names, but I just find it a bit meh. I prefer Emmeline, it's more interesting

Vivienne1000 · 09/05/2025 21:11

Matilda is lovely, often shortened to Tilly. Imogen shortened to Immy and Emily shortened to Em or Emmy. All beautiful names.

Imogen is more unusual and lovely . All nice names

I have 3 Imogens in one of my classes! I like Matilda.

Glitchymn1 · 09/05/2025 21:09

Emily (Em) Imogen (Immy). I’m not a Matty /Tilda Matilda fan.

WtafIsThat · 09/05/2025 21:04

Matilda and Imogen were names I heard a lot of about ten years ago. I don’t like Matilda and I can’t stand Tillie. Emily is just a bit dull but the nicest of the three. Tbh they’re just generic overused girl’s names.

cariadlet · 09/05/2025 20:55

All absolutely lovely. I didn't vote because I couldn't choose just one.

Imogen - it’s getting quite popular so might overtake the other two, but not yet.

I don't think it will. It doesn't have the mass appeal of the other two.
Babies called Imogen in England & Wales since 1996

clareykb · 09/05/2025 20:53

I like all of them, I have an Emily but Matilda was on our list too..just wanted to say though that for all that Emily is often said to me very over used in all her time at school she's never had another in her year of 60 kids.

I don't like Imogen at all. It's almost as bad as Margot.

Matilda's pretty.

Margot is great

You little weirdo you

I like Imogen- lovely name.

BoleynMemories13 · 09/05/2025 20:14

Emily. Matilda is ok but I don't like the nicknames. I don't like Imogen at all.

ByeByeByeee · 09/05/2025 20:02

Matilda is my favourite, followed by Imogen - both lovely!

Emily fine too

StupidBoy · 09/05/2025 20:00

Imogen and Matilda are both lovely. I find Emily a bit twee,

HugoYorway · 09/05/2025 19:59

In order: Imogen, Emily, Matilda, but I don't like Immy or Tilly/Tilda, so Emily seems the easiest.
