Tree names - what do you think?

So my eldest is Rowan (boy), and bump is a few months away from arrival.

If bump is female, we’re fairly set on Elowen (pronounced Eh-LOW-en), maybe Holly as a back up. Could be swayed to other ideas.

If bump is male, we’re undecided. Maybe Lennox (and Lex for short). Although I do like Lachlan (not tree themed but still nice). Some version of Ash is another option, although I think Ashley is a girls name usually these days?

Any other ideas? We’ve looked at many tree name lists, but I want to hear opinions/preferences.

Some really lovely suggestions from people / thank you so much!

DH isn’t bothered by Elowen rhyming with Rowan, and tbh it’s not a bar for me either, but it’s good to be reminded of some gorgeous alternatives to keep in mind. I especially like Ivy, Daphne, and Alba. Afterall when baby arrives maybe one of these will feel more “her”.

And if it’s a boy, Hollis is now as option, and increasingly Ash too. Might investigate more Australian varieties too… Thank you!

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it, but I think Acer is an amazing name!

Isn't the name Asa, though?

Rowan (as in Atkinson) and the Eh-LOW-en pronunciation sound very similar to me.

Ashleigh is more common for girls these days I think, Ashley for boys.
Willow is nice.

I thought this. I think Rowan and Elowen are too samey op and it sounds a bit like Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee.

I like Holly with Rowan and also love the op suggestion of Willow.

Hazel, Juniper, Cherry?

TheCountessofLocksley · 25/04/2025 19:49

Linden (for a boy) - it’s not as ubiquitous as some tree/nature names. Bit different - Vernon or Willoughby (if you like Willow for a girl)

Juniper, Ivy or Sylvie (for a girl). I do like Elowen but people mispronouncing it would drive me mad!

HugoYorway · 25/04/2025 19:47

I did, but my girl suggestion is better Smile

PhaseFour · 25/04/2025 19:42

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it, but I think Acer is an amazing name!

Cassthehotwaterbottle · 25/04/2025 19:42

I love Ash for a boy, but I can't stand Ashley as it's a surname and means a grove of trees, not one tree!

HugoYorway · 25/04/2025 19:41

Acer for a boy
Kalinka for a girl

Snorlaxo · 25/04/2025 19:40

Ash makes me think of Pokemon. If your son doesn’t end up liking Pokemon then he’s likely to find it annoying.

Elowen is a Lord of the Rings character iirc but I’ve also seen it spelled Elowyn - maybe someone more knowledgeable can comment ?

Rowan is the only boy tree name I can think of. Would you extend it to nature names?

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 25/04/2025 19:39

Eucalyptus
Christmas
Fig

???

WonderingWanda · 25/04/2025 19:33

I love Willow, Hazel and Holly. Also Alba, used in some tree names.

Jennalong · 25/04/2025 19:30

I know a male Hawthorn .

I agree that Rowan and Elowen are very similar, and more akin to twin names.

Do you live in Aus or UK?
Jarrah/Jarra
Acacia
Banksia
Myrtle
Grevillea
Correa
Lilly

I was in fact tempted by Lillipilli! 😝

If you like Elowen, I don't think it matters that it doesn't "go" with Rowan. Kids are not sets and they don't have to match.

This is my feeling too, I’m rarely paired with my siblings as an adult, or even after a certain age. I think if they were twins it would be different.
