Possibly Carter Matthew.

Last name starts with an A.

Reminds me of Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine

HelloMrBond · 23/04/2025 22:10

As in a horse carter? Or ‘get Carter’ as in Michael Caine? Either way it’s a surname or a profession, not a forename.

Changeissmall · 23/04/2025 22:10

No

Pollyanna87 · 23/04/2025 22:09

Sorry, but it’s awful. Makes me think of Jay Z.

minnienono · 23/04/2025 22:08

The unstoppable sex machine was my first thought. Definitely a surname not first name

Mistyglade · 23/04/2025 22:07

awful

IsThePopeCatholic · 23/04/2025 22:04

Awful. Sounds so hillbilly.

ChloeCannotCanCan · 23/04/2025 22:02

I don’t normally mind surname names but I really don’t like Carter - I can’t quite put my finger on why! It just sounds a bit wrong somehow…

it’s bloody awful for a girl though - how about Harper or Piper?

DramaAlpaca · 23/04/2025 22:00

Not good for a boy, and truly dreadful for a girl.

Matthew is nice though.

Energe · 23/04/2025 21:58

I think it looks and sounds ugly.

Nordicrugosa · 23/04/2025 21:57

The film “Get Carter”

I like it. Mumsnet is very odd about surname style first names in a way you never hear in real life. Plus the band achieved mold popularity in the 1980's, so hardly some most kids will have heard of. My kids don't even know who the beatles were, it's ancient history.

I suspect whether people think that is area dependent.

Actually, it’s class dependant, but people don’t want to hear that…

People in "real life" will lie out of politeness. Anonymous forums give a much truer picture.

Awful as a first name, like Parker, Cooper etc, they’re surnames.

I know it’s not the point but I like Cooper!! Going on the list

Mr Carter
Capt Carter
Major Carter
Commander Carter
Dr Carter
Professor Carter
The Rev'd Carter

All absolutely fine. They all need a sensible first name.

PlanetOtter · 23/04/2025 21:37

Not nice.

A carter is … someone who carts. And people who drop their Ts will say Car-er, which is awful.

AmateurNoun · 23/04/2025 21:34

I don't like it. It's a surname and using it as a first name seems very American and naff to be honest.

TheTigerWhoCameToBrunch · 23/04/2025 21:32

American, tacky, surname. If you’re in the UK it will place him squarely in the lower classes.

But Matthew is great!

RichPetuniaAgain · 23/04/2025 21:31

It’s a no from me

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 23/04/2025 21:31

AmusedZebra · 23/04/2025 20:29

ooo interesting! I like that

Please don't

DappledThings · 23/04/2025 21:31

Pretty bad for a boy, absolutely awful for a girl.

IggyAce · 23/04/2025 21:30

I like it, my ds has a surname and also seen as an action as a first name. Ignore the surname as a first name hate.

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 23/04/2025 21:29

I like names to have a meaning. Brave warrior or something! Something to make the child feel special. I'm not keen on names like Carter for this reason. Someone who drives a cart? Unless there's a deeper meaning?

StrongandNorthern · 23/04/2025 21:24

Awful name, sorry.
