Cordelia is top of our list at the moment

Thought? Any similar names we might like?

Better than Regan.

Finally someone said it 😂

NefiBlw · 28/04/2025 13:34

@Darkambergingerlily , what should you name your baby daughter if you live in a bog standard housing estate?

NefiBlw · 28/04/2025 13:15

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/04/2025 17:31

Better than Regan.

Goneril? I think Regan is OK, but it makes me think of John Thaw.

ChocoChocoLatte · 28/04/2025 07:04

And yet Claudia means lame so I personally wouldn’t use it. Each to their own.

Switcher · 27/04/2025 17:44

Claudia is much nicer. Although if you ever move to German you'll find a large number of over 50s share the name.
Cordelia sounds too much like cord.

Yogagrandmum · 27/04/2025 17:33

Love the name. Delia.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/04/2025 17:31

Better than Regan.

OllyBJolly · 27/04/2025 17:09

Love it! I know 2 - one in her 30s called Corrie and one in her 50s called Cora. Although I don't know that parents can pick nicknames - in my experience the children (or their friends) decide what they're called.

It's a beautiful, strong name. I didn't know the connection with the sea and that makes me love it even more!

Words · 27/04/2025 17:02

Very Brideshead.
Just be strict on any attempts to shorten it. Delia is dreadful.

fratellia · 27/04/2025 16:39

Not keen. By itself the name is fairly nice but I just don’t really like the ‘vibe’ it has, as PPs have said it’s a bit private-school.

PumpkinScarf · 27/04/2025 07:49

I really like it

Darkambergingerlily · 27/04/2025 07:47

I feel like fine if she’s got a future at boarding school.

If you live in a bog standard housing estate it seems a little social reaching - just a bit off and ambitious

Ab1ga1L3 · 27/04/2025 05:46

I hate it … sounds very posh/ pretentious, like she would live in a stately home.

I much prefer Claudia, Cora, Cecelia. They seem much more wearable.

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 26/04/2025 23:03

I liked it - for me, it recalls King Lear and Brideshead Revisited, not Buffy - but in the end we went with another Shakespearean name.

ChocoChocoLatte · 26/04/2025 22:57

We have one and she’s an absolute doll. Not posh here either & she’s the only one we know.

TheTerribleMaster · 26/04/2025 22:30

I adore this name and wanted it for a daughter alas I only had sons

abricotine · 26/04/2025 22:29

@ThreeLuckyStars I do know all that already, but wouldn’t choose to name my child after such a tragic figure no matter how virtuous! As I said, others may feel differently.

ThreeLuckyStars · 26/04/2025 22:00

abricotine · 26/04/2025 21:47

She is hanged by a traitor in prison, at a very young age though. It’s a miserable association. Like Ophelia! Fwiw I don’t really understand why anyone would use those names. But perhaps the Shakespeare association doesn’t bother everyone or they have other reasons to choose them 🤷‍♀️

She was the only truthful one of the three daughters and the only loyal one to her father. She loved him authentically and not as means to the end of a larger inheritance. The king of France married her for her virtue and her father ordered her death but once he realised the truth of things called it off; she was killed before the order was rescinded. Her sisters lived in depravity but she died with honour.

WinterKitchen · 26/04/2025 21:48

I love Cordelia. Don't shorten it to Delia though that's old lady.

abricotine · 26/04/2025 21:47

ThreeLuckyStars · 26/04/2025 21:32

She’s the heroine of King Lear though imho

MotherOfVizslas · 26/04/2025 21:42

I think it’s really pretty. Little Baby Cordy🥰

LaurenBacalls · 26/04/2025 21:41

Cordelia Chase people!

yes I’m a Buffy fan. Buffy aside, I think it’s a beautiful name and unique.

GetDressedYouMerryGentlemen · 26/04/2025 21:40

AnneShirleysNewDress · 23/04/2025 20:02

I love it.

Of course you do, it's Anne's favourite name!

ThreeLuckyStars · 26/04/2025 21:32

MightAsWellBeGretel · 25/04/2025 16:58

It makes me think of King Lear and Cat's Eye, where Margaret Atwood's protagonist asks why anyone would call their daughter after such a tragic character (Cordelia).

She’s the heroine of King Lear though imho

Nichebitch · 26/04/2025 21:18

My DD is called Cordelia and buffy never crossed my mind - I love king Lear. Also, I don’t own a country state or a dog of any kind, and actually grew up in a 50m2 flat.
she likes to be called Cordi. There’s another one in her school.
some people can’t understand others liking different things and need to be offensive for some reason. I could have a guess at the names they would choose but I rather don’t.
