I really love it but keep getting told it’s too feminine

Hannah Horvath has a very male (she's constantly having to check his male privilege and counter his misogyny) boyfriend called Fran Parker in series 5 of Girls - and, astonishingly, no one ever mentioned the obvious fact that this is typically a girls' name in the USA, even when he's taunting one of the female students at the school where they both teach for being called Maile.

Gardenservant · 04/07/2025 21:18

I would always assume that Fran was a girl, short for Frances or Francesca.

Bluelavenders · 04/07/2025 10:38

Fran is a women’s name to me. It also rhymes with Gran 👵🏻

I love Frankie for both sexes too!

Agree! So cute!

I know two male Frans. One Francesco and one Francis. They’re both in their teens.

I know two! One a family member in his 70’s and one a friend from my teens. It’s lovely I think!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 13/04/2025 23:33

Yes, it is often in Scotland and Ireland

Francis and Franklin are v popular so I imagine it will get more popular as a male diminutive in England also

monktasmic · 13/04/2025 23:11

Yes - 100% I know and love a little boy who is Francis shortened to Fran / Franna

Bestfadeplans · 13/04/2025 22:06

Yes! I went to school with a lad called francesco lazarano and everyone called him fran. He was so cool!

clarrylove · 07/04/2025 20:19

Shortened to Franner, well in Bristol anyway!

Bluelavenders · 07/04/2025 20:10

Of course! Fran is short for Francis, Frank etc

EternalSunshine25 · 07/04/2025 20:10

I know a male Fran in his 60s but not keen on it at all.

BoleynMemories13 · 07/04/2025 20:07

Of course it works for a boy, it's totally unisex. Would usually be a nn for Francis (I knew one growing up who would be mid 30s by now), but could work for Frank too.

AmiablePedant · 07/04/2025 18:49

Livelaughlurgy · 07/04/2025 15:46

Would be common in Ireland.

And the States. Well, because of Irish Americans.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/04/2025 18:32

I know 2 male Frans and know of Fran Healy.

The Francescas I know go by Franny, Francesca and Cesca.

So in my experience, Fran is very much a male name.

User6761 · 07/04/2025 16:50

Much prefer Fran to Frank

vix3rd · 07/04/2025 16:47

I know a Fran, Franny, Frank, Franky.

Chunkilumptious · 07/04/2025 16:44

Fran is lovely, much nicer than the harsh sounding Frank or Frankie.

TruthOrNo · 07/04/2025 16:40

Absolutely. I know a male Fran, short for Francis.

TherealmrsT · 07/04/2025 16:40

Worked with a male Fran (Irish if it matters) and had a female Fran friend. Both were fine, same as Chris would be for Christopher/ Christine.

toastofthetown · 07/04/2025 16:28

I think it’s fine, and as a nickname if he doesn’t like it, he can very easily switch to his full name or another nickname he prefers.

Norastroud · 07/04/2025 16:07

I love Frankie for both sexes too!

Norastroud · 07/04/2025 16:07

I know a male Fran, short for Francis and a female Fran short for Francesca. I think it’s unisex as both really suit their names.

MyKingdomForACat · 07/04/2025 15:55

Can you not just stick a K on the end?
