Tybalt?

Hi,
I was thinking Tybalt as the name for the baby boy I’m expecting. I think it’s a lovely name but I’m slightly worried about the Romeo/Juliet implications as well.
For the middle name we were considering Ripley, so the name would be Tybalt Ripley, as again think the name is lovely.
Could we possibly get away with naming our son this without people thinking he’s the Romeo + Juliet character!!!

I never understand why people ask for opinions on baby names because some will gush and some will gag. You do you.

If you want my opinion, though, Tybalt will always, ALWAYS be associated with R&J.

Why not choose the French spelling Thibaut? Thibaut Pinot is a national hero in France both as a pro cyclist and an animal lover and all round lovely guy. Very positive vibes.

Oh my god what????!!!! Poor child, he will get the piss ripped. Almost as bad as the woman I know who called her baby daughter ‘Dewberry’ in the late 90’s when that scent was all the rage.

Tybalt Ripley is a silly name.
Pick a name for you child that you like, not just because it's uncommon. Some names are uncommon for good reason.

I’d prefer names that start with a Ty that aren’t Tyler as well if anybody has suggestions.

But how would Tybalt be pronounced in your country? In the UK it’s ’Tibbult’’, roughly. Nothing like Tyler.

I quite like it! Never heard it outside Romeo & Juliet so I think it's inevitable English speakers will think of that, but I do know a French Thibault (pronounced Tee-boh), which is a name I've always liked.

Why are you bothering to post on a mainly uk website if you aren’t in the uk? If it’s an English speaking country you will have the exact same issues as here, if you are in a country that speaks a different language then you need to ask people there don’t you? it’s cruel to name your child something that they may get bullied over.

Ripley's problematic too. Have you read Patricia Highsmith's Ripley series? (They are brilliant, if you haven't). Ripley is a murdering sociopath. There are no way these names work as a) if you didn't know the literary uses, you look ignorant, not a good look when it comes to something as important as naming a child, b) if you DO know, well, you've chosen the names of two highly problematic characters.

If it's the "Ty" that's important to you rather than the actual name Tybalt and you want it to be original, just start with Ty and make up the rest with something that sounds reasonable.

e.g. Tyborne, Tylan, Tymore, Tyness etc, etc........... Just play around with it till you find something that works.

Edited to add I'm serious by the way, not about those particular names as they were the first ones that came into my head, but if you play around long enough you're bound to come up with something that's original without being "out there".

Probably because my brain pronounces it as mentioned by a previous poster. Tie-Balt.
