What do you think of Dennis n Denny? Or maybe just Denny on its own?

The thing is, when old-fashioned names start making a comeback, there is always that initial horror from some people. The trend of the last few years for Archie, Alfie, Ethel, Ivy etc horrified my mum but obviously my generation like them.

However, Dennis the Menace is still popular so that will definitely be a possible tease.

My cat is called Dennis. He likes his name.

midlifeattheoasis · 09/04/2025 16:00

Oh my god, NO

Dennis is a Greek name. I don't think it works well in English.
Why not call him Daniel instead? And use Dany as a nickname?

Dennis is the English version of a Greek name. It works perfectly well in English.

@Firebird83I know a little Dennis, and also a Malcolm and a Paul. I think names like that are on the rebound.

I like Dennis with nn Denny.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 08/04/2025 23:29

The menace. Not good sorry

SkaneTos · 08/04/2025 22:41

Dennis is a good name!
I know a very nice man called Dennis, he is 55 years old.

Fioratourer · 08/04/2025 22:15

I know older style names do make a come back but I can’t fall in love with this one I’m afraid. The Dennis’s I know are over 65.

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/04/2025 16:27

There are a few at my childrens school (lots of Eastern European children) and they are all pain in the bums - pushing others, disrupting lessons, general silliness - so that is my main impression of the name

RuthW · 06/04/2025 16:25

love Dennis.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/04/2025 22:33

My stepdad is a lovely man and it suits him. He’s 79.

PancakePatty · 05/04/2025 22:31

I have a Dennis. It’s a good masculine name I think. It’s traditional, doesn’t sound like I invented it myself, probably not be anyone else in the playground with the same name.No nick names, Denny sounds a bit twee to me. No one has said anything offensive about the name. It’s a common name in my neck of the woods for men aged 60 & above. I know quite a few older Dennis’s. My son suits the name I think.
It’s a yes from me.

Firebird83 · 05/04/2025 22:02

Looks like the consensus is it’s too dated and not ready for a comeback yet! 😂

Love it!

EmotionallyWeird · 05/04/2025 21:52

It's rare nowadays but I kind of like it. I had a friend called Dennis when I was little (he'd be about 55 now, I think) who was the quiet, sensible one in a family of rather wild boys, and it still makes me think of him. I definitely prefer it with two Ns, too many boring politicians and politicians' husbands have been called the version with one N.

RhythmIsADisaster · 05/04/2025 21:48

I love it but only as it was my Dad’s name 🥹

IsItWickedNotToCare · 05/04/2025 21:46

Dirty Den

GMH1974 · 05/04/2025 21:41

If you're going to have the nickname Denny just use the actual French name Denys, pronounced in the same way.

OMG no! 😆

Anywherebuthere · 05/04/2025 21:37

It sounds old fashioned and dated.

Nevertrustacop · 05/04/2025 21:31

I know a family of three little lads, Eric, Dennis and Sean. Brilliant names all of them.

Mumsnet is a fickle place, when I asked about using Dennis as a middle name just last year I was roundly told yes of course!

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/baby_names/4994157-dennis-as-a-middle-name?utm_campaign=thread&utm_medium=share

We did use it in the end by the way and I love it more every time I say it. I also dug into the statistics and in 2023 in the UK it was number 461, so more popular than many a name that gets suggested here!

Middle name is quite different though

There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with Denis, it’s just that he’s 74 and married to Pam

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 05/04/2025 21:29

Denis is like Terry and Norman - it’s just too early to revive it

You could use Denzil, although it’s rather eccentric you do have the Denzil Washington reference

Daniel/Danny or Darius/Darry might be better

Dennis as a middle name? | Mumsnet

Any thoughts? It was my beloved Grandad's name (My Dad wasn't around so he was my primary male role model and my hero). I'd love to h...

Okay so the new Minecraft movie has an adorable dog called Dennis which made me like it a bit more 🤣

LemograssLollipop · 05/04/2025 16:48

Too old fashioned. DH had an uncle called Dennis who is sadly no longer with us.

Plus Dirty Den from EastEnders
