What do you think of Charis?

...for a girl. It means 'grace' in Greek. Think it's pronounced 'Karis'.

Is it too weird? Will people call her 'CH-aris' or spell her name incorrectly all the time?

The other option is 'Edith' (Edie for short).

Our surname is Emmanuel so can't have names ending in 'a' or 'er' (surprisingly few girls' names don't end like that, but good suggestions welcome too).

I have a Charis. Yes, it is always mispronounced and misspelt but that doesn't bother us. I still think it is one of the prettiest girls' names and I love the meaning.

So there, tmmj.

Yeah, janeite, totally agree! left off the biblical names for our ds for that reason.

No particular reason here, it's just one of those names that doesn't sit right with me. As ever, if you like it then use it, however I do think that Edith Emmanuel sounds a bit...odd. A bit too much like Elizabeth Emmanuel.

MerryMarigold · 11/05/2008 18:03

'Carys' is a totally different welsh name, different origin and meaning.

Those that don't like 'edith', any reasons?

Don't like it all sorry but Grace itself is lovely. Although Grace Emmanuel may sound a bit too "holy"!

noddyholder · 11/05/2008 17:39

edith is lovely

cyteen · 11/05/2008 17:38

It's nice, but people will inevitably pronounce the Ch. If this doesn't bother you, go for it - lots of 'normal' names require constant spelling out, after all.

I don't like Edith, I'm afraid. How about Caroline, Sylvie, Marianne...they all work well with Emmanuel?

WanderingTrolley · 11/05/2008 17:34

I think people will pronounce the 'ch'

And yes, people will spell her name incorrectly forever (unless they're Greek) and she will tell people her name and then go onto autospell immediately and spell it out....

I love the name Charis and I would spell it that way. I know a few Carys' and a Karis who're all under 3 so not totally unusual.

Or you could just go for Grace?
