What do you think of Charis?

...for a girl. It means 'grace' in Greek. Think it's pronounced 'Karis'.

Is it too weird? Will people call her 'CH-aris' or spell her name incorrectly all the time?

The other option is 'Edith' (Edie for short).

Our surname is Emmanuel so can't have names ending in 'a' or 'er' (surprisingly few girls' names don't end like that, but good suggestions welcome too).

mmmm...booge, not heard of that one! thanks for enlightening me. I'm sure that's pronounced with a 'ch'!

I've only ever heard of it in terms of cannabis.

Boys' names are a nightmare.

janeite · 11/05/2008 18:23

We found boys' names easy - but had two girls! We were still arguing over what to call dd2 when I was in the birthing pool!

SoupDragon · 11/05/2008 18:23

Oh I know, Procrastinating. there is, of course, nothing wrong with unusual names but you have to be prepared for mispellings and mispronunciations.

Mind you, DS2 has a ordinary name spelt the normal way and it is spelt incorrectly about 90% of the time. [sigh]

i love it, sounds and looks lovely.

What SoupDragon said.

dd1's middle name is Carys. I wish quite a lot now that it was her first name. Love it.

probably have a boy, but too bored by boys' names to think of one right now.

I would do as SoupDragon suggests I'm afraid.

Edie is nice.

procrastinatingparent · 11/05/2008 18:14

They do, Soup Dragon. But I just consider that I am broadening their phonological horizons.

For Georgette Heyer fans, one of her dippier heroines is called Charis.

janeite · 11/05/2008 18:13

Yes, Edith is a bit hard sounding - but Edie is pretty. But I don't really like the same initial for surname and first name, though presumably that doesn't bother you.

Choose what YOU like though, ignore us lot!

MerryMarigold · 11/05/2008 18:13

yes, procrastinating, these 2 are the only ones dh and i can agree on, we have very different tastes!

PortAndLemon · 11/05/2008 18:12

I love Charis -- first encountered it on a book character and then was at school with one. But I rejected it as a name because I knew it would get confused with the more common Carys.

Edith is nice too.

but then my DD's name has recently been roundly slated on MN, so what do I know?

SoupDragon · 11/05/2008 18:10

Everyone will pronounce it Charis with a "chair Ch" and spell it Carys.

NOT Edith.

I like Charis.

MerryMarigold · 11/05/2008 18:09

ooh, we'll get loads of 'edie' supporters on in a minute mmj.

chinchi · 11/05/2008 18:09

Charis is a lovely name- something different, and goes great with your surname.

It sounds like one of those stylish brand names like 'Nicky Clarke' or 'Giorgio Armani'- Charis Emmanuel- I love it!

procrastinatingparent · 11/05/2008 18:09

Actually, I'm sure she will hate having to spell it all the time when she is older. But tough. It is the only one of our 4 DCs names that DH and I ever agreed on from the beginning.

ELR · 11/05/2008 18:08

when i read it i pronounced the ch so maybe people will grace is my fave name Edith ok
