Ezra and Aria?

armt · 14/02/2025 21:14

We have an Aria. Would it be odd to have Ezra as our boys name?

We chose Aria because of its meaning and we loved it. I had heard it on pretty little liars the show.

We're having a boy and LOVE Ezra, not because of the show!!!.... is this too odd. Would people notice?

Aria and Ezra go well for siblings.

If he turns out to be a girl you could choose Desma.

Well it's still VERY popular (I teach in a school and the teenagers still love it) so surely it's too soon to say!

I'm amazed you didn't make the link if you've watched it though!

Ah, I had kind of assumed it would disappear as it was so crap but I don't have much contact with teens.

I think now I know so many little Ezras that name has been retrained in my brain and the connection didn't happen.

I actually know siblings called Ezra and Aria and I've never made the link nor heard anybody else mention it (Circle of mostly mid/late-thirties so possibly too old).

It really doesn't have what a show takes to stand the test of time so it's not like Ross and Rachel or Sandy and Danny. Every year fewer people will make the connection, it's already 7 years old, I watched it and totally forgot!

I thought of the show, although separately they are gorgeous names.

Some might, I'm early 30s and haven't watched it so definitely not all.

I'm late 30s and when I saw the title of the post I assumed it was a rant about the inappropriate relationship between those characters in PLL. I do think it's really weird to call your kids that particuar pairing, just as Danny and Sandy would be, or Jack and Jill. If you don't know the show, you might not find it weird, but it is something that would stick to them for their entire lives.

You said all other mums in her circle and teachers, they're mostly not going to be between 18 and 28.

I guess that depends how old OP is. The fact she’s made the connection might mean she does in fact have a younger circle.

Also ages of teachers vary of course, but all the teachers up to around age 28 will be likely to make the connection.

FairlyTired · 23/03/2025 21:59

YourAmberFawn · 23/03/2025 21:10

So do you fall in to the 18-28 age range I suggested by being early 30s? 🤣

Nearly all the girls in that generation will have at least heard of the names - it was very popular in schools when it was out.

Lovely pairing.

PumpkinScarf · 23/03/2025 20:51

They do go nicely together and are a similar type of name but yes my first thought was PLL if that bothers you. I’m 32 for reference.

A lot of MN’s may not know the show but I think nearly every woman currently aged between 18-28 knows that show.

It was incredibly popular and I don’t know of anybody in that age range who hasn’t at least heard of the characters.

Your kids peers most probably won’t know it and won’t make the connection, but I reckon all other mums in your circle / your kids teachers will definitely make the connection.

For me it’s a definite no.

Love them together, not watched the show.

surreygirl1987 · 23/03/2025 20:46

I agree with the above poster. It's like calling your kids Ross and Rachel. I don't think it's fair on them (especially as Ezra was sleazy and formed a relationship with his student, Aria!).

My children have family names which happened to be paired in a very popular film about 20 years ago.
Sometimes people comment, but only people my age. No one in their generation knows the film.

Both characters were lovely luckily!

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/02/2025 08:55

Nice combo
never heard of the show
I’m quite ancient tho (46)

Tabbsi · 22/02/2025 08:53

I wouldn’t personally choose a biblical name such as Ezra, but it sounds cool.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 19/02/2025 22:05

I also made the connection instantly but only because I binge watched that show once when I had too much time on my hands. I don't think that many people would think of it though. The show wasn't that popular.

I've never heard of the TV show but clearly, from the comments here, quite a few people will think of the connection in the names.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/02/2025 23:52

I did make the connection but it’s quite a niche audience- I just can’t see PLL making cult status or becoming super popular and the general population becoming aware of it (imo it’s seen as “a teenage girl show” and not one that crosses audience markets like Buffy or something).

So imo you are fine OP - and luckily Ezra and Aria are popular Top 100 names here too, so even if someone did make the connection, I doubt they would comment. I think they would assume the parents liked them due to their popular sound, rather than naming their kids after a teacher and his student on an American TV show iykwim?

SlinkySprings · 14/02/2025 23:46

I don't think pretty little liars will stand the test of time mainly thanks to running on for way too many seasons and having a weird crap ending so you will be fine.

surreygirl1987 · 14/02/2025 23:35

Yeh, I'm afraid I think it would be weird. Maybe a lot of mumsnetters don't get the connection but loads of people will. I came on this thread because I thought it was going to be a thread bashing Ezra for grooming Aria 'such a disturbing relationship!!

chergar · 14/02/2025 23:25

I immediately thought of the show, my 18 year old daughter would know it as well as PLL is on iplayer (or Netflix or something) and she has watched it as have a few of her friends
