DH loves it but something feels off.

Which Iona Jones do you mean? I know a few of them.

Whoarethoseguys · 08/02/2025 13:46

I think it's lovely.

Oh you are right, I don't think it goes, is it maybe because Jones is a predominantly Welsh name so the Scottish name doesn't "go"

I think it’s just too many ‘oh’s !

How about Ianthe?

InMySpareTime · 08/02/2025 08:52

How about
Catriona Jones?
Siobhan Jones?

Both have the io but without emphasising the o sound

I'm not keen on Iona and funnily enough I also think Lorna sounds mournful!
What about Fiona or Ffion?

The mournful Lorna connection is because of “forlorn”.

Samantha Jones ? 😉

I like Lorna but DH says it sound really sad (as in mournful) 😂💖

I also like Lorna Jones better than Iona Jones. I don't think it sounds sad.

MistyF · 08/02/2025 06:30

No, not Bridget Jones - there's old chick lit and films with Bridget Jones as titular main character

I think it's -on- -on- in name that make it sound sing-songy and weird.
I do like suggestions of Ida Jones.

user1492757084 · 07/02/2025 22:01

Iona Jones is too rhymey for me.

Isla Jones
Ida Jones
Sara Jones
Bridget Jones - the best.
Catriona Jones

I’d assumed “Yonna” Jones and was about to say how nice it is. “EyeOwnAh Jones” less so because of the repetition as you’ve said.

I really like the suggestion of Isla. But my favourite Scottish names are Kirsty and Senga which are not particularly popular here, however.

So where did the Jones come from then?

Irish Joneses!

Maxorias · 07/02/2025 21:32

Haha I automatically thought "how about India ?"
Probably a bad idea but it'd definitely be a conversation starter.

WhatTheKey · 07/02/2025 21:24

I know two people with this name! Yes, I am Welsh.

HotCrossBunplease · 07/02/2025 21:20

BananaBum · 07/02/2025 21:06

yes thinking the Scottish probounciation. We are predominantly Scottish/Irish heritage

OhMehGoddess · 07/02/2025 21:18

We love the name, but no way in hell would it have been fair on a child with our surname.

As soon as I read it I thought of Indiana Jones.

Yes me too!

mum11970 · 07/02/2025 21:08

Sorry cross post there with OP

mum11970 · 07/02/2025 21:07

Iona is pronounced ‘yonna’ in Wales. It’s can also be pronounced ‘yo na’ and ‘i o na’. Would help if OP clarified which pronunciation she is referring to.

Unremarkable name here in Wales!

Very much so! I know 3!

I think that the number of people who are pronouncing it the Scottish way, including the OP makes it problematic as people like me will pronounce it the Welsh way. Especially with the surname Jones.

PurpleBrocadePeacock · 07/02/2025 21:02

It’s a bit weird if you speak a language like German that pronounces “J” as “Y” (so it sounds a bit like Yona-Yonas) but this is not so much a problem in English.

Enough4me · 07/02/2025 21:01

I always read Iona as "I own a". Prefer Iris or Isla.

JengaNonConfirming · 07/02/2025 20:59

What about Ione, instead of Iona?
