Petra or Danica

Ever since I was small I’ve loved the name Petra. I idea why but I was a history fanatic. Is it an okay or a definitely not. I’ve never met another one in the UK but know three German people with the name.

OH current favourite is Danica as he likes the meaning and his dad is a Daniel. I’m just thinking she will end up another Danny though I’m not dead against that.

Barry McGuigan’s daughter was Danika

They're both great choices. I slightly prefer Petra but Danica is lovely. For reasons unknown I have a memory that he great Nigel Mansel had a daughter called Danica. The things brains retain!

Nigel's children are Greg, Leo and Chloe, but there is a famous racing driver named Danica Patrick, so maybe that's why you thought along those lines.
No idea why I googled all that 🤣

I really love Danica it's so lovely and unusual. Petra to me is harsh to say in English .

Oceangrey · 02/02/2025 09:26

I've always liked Petra, from the character in The Chrysalids

I like both, but probably Petra just that little bit more. I knew a nice girl at university called Petra so I think of it as being a nice name!

wandawaves · 02/02/2025 01:39

I'm going to go against the grain... i much prefer Danica. Petra has a very harsh sound to it imo.

SilvieBear · 02/02/2025 01:39

Petra 💯

AmateurNoun · 02/02/2025 01:29

Petra is lovely.

Danica is kind of cool although I do really associate it with Danica Patrick. There's nothing wrong with Danica Patrick but it's a very strong association.

theduchessofspork · 02/02/2025 01:22

I quite like Petra

Danica is a bit random

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 01/02/2025 21:41

I love both but Petra just edges it for me.

Snowmanscarf · 01/02/2025 21:40

Love Petra.

nb. Any over a certain age will associate this name with a Blue Peter dog, but don’t let this put you off. It’s a great name, and fits into the ‘unusual, and everyone knows it and can spell it, but not whacky’ category.

Christwosheds · 01/02/2025 21:40

I love Petra . I know one, in her 50s, Scandinavian. It’s a wonderful name.

ThePoshUns · 01/02/2025 21:38

I love Petra and know a lovely person by that name. I'd love to visit the place as well.
I like Danica too.

1984Winston · 01/02/2025 21:09

I love Petra but my DH didn't sadly! Would absolutely have used it otherwise

Moreteaandchocolate · 01/02/2025 21:05

I really like Petra. Danica is fine, just sounds a little harsher to me.

I went to primary school with a Petra, (would be mid 40s now) and have also taught one. (Would be 19 now) Both in Northern Ireland - neither particularly pleasant people - both kind of “hard girls” so for me I associate the name with that kind of vibe.

I have a lovely friend called Danita just to throw in another Dani type name to the mix.

Danielle is very 80s to me, but maybe it’s due a revival, and I do like Dani for a girl.

shoopshoopdedoo · 01/02/2025 20:18

Petra. I also really like Petra Danielle.

muddyford · 01/02/2025 20:13

Petra.

Rockyshore · 01/02/2025 19:56

Petra was the name of the trainee doctor who basically spend her day with me having an ectopic pregnancy diagnosed. So it's an awesome name belonging to awesome people. It was 18 years ago and I've not forgotten her.

Danika is my SIL!

I agree with others: Petra Danielle.

Goandygo · 01/02/2025 19:28

I only know 1 Petra, she's Welsh. I like it.
I taught a lovely girl from Mauritius called Danica. I like that, too.
Agree Petra Danielle is lovely.

Emanwenym · 01/02/2025 19:27

Petra. I don't know if Danica is Danny-ka or Daneeka.
