Merryn, Manon or Morgan

I just can't seem to find the right name. We really want something that says feisty, explorer but wouldn't be so out there that if she was a homebird it would seem wrong. OH still loves Skye (sentimental reasons) and Morven but I don't know if Skye has had its day. I only know the actress Morven Christie

I wish I’d stuck to my guns and used Merryn, it’s one of my all time favourites!

I find the names a bit hint of woo. Not feisty explorer. But you're naming and creating a child not a video game character - you can't know in advance -, so I would perhaps review.

mathanxiety · 01/02/2025 00:08

Merryn is lovely.

Morgan is not to my taste, and Manon will not be pronounced as it should be in the UK.

SabbatWheel · 01/02/2025 00:06

I love Morwenna.
DH vetoed it though, so we didn't use it.

JC03745 · 31/01/2025 23:38

I only like Manon from that list, but it works better if you speak Welsh or French.
Morgan and Merryn are too masculine.

Funny how you think the name MAN-on isn't masculine sounding? 😕

Skye is perfect!
My faves, inspired by your list...

Skye Merryn
Skye Meryl
Meryl Saoirse
Manon Skye
Skye Manon
Skye Morven
Saoirse Merryn

Firebird83 · 31/01/2025 23:02

I like Merryn, although it was originally a masculine name and the only one I know is male.

Manon sounds like “man on”

What about Mirren or Maren?

ZiggyZowie · 31/01/2025 22:48

Merryn

MirandaBlu · 31/01/2025 22:46

Love Morgan. It's also one of those rare trad unisex names that still seems usable for a girl or boy.

Not sure about Merryn - as far as I can see it is a Cornish male name? I'm used to seeing the Scottish Merrin/Mirrin (once upon a time short for Marian/Mariana, but now an established stand-alone).

Manon is also pronounced the French way in my head - almost more man-OH than man-OHN. (Plus it makes me think of the deity the girls worship in The Craft.)

Skye is OK - it's a Scottish place name, as is Morven. Merida (Mérida) is a city in Mexico. These kinds of names are popular at the moment, but for the long haul I would be more inclined to use a place name a middle name than as a first name.

I like Morgane and Morven.

BootballJoy · 31/01/2025 21:02

Merryn Skye is lovely.

Ever since watching Manon des Sources I've found Manon depressing as a name. Manon Lescaut is not much better.

You could look at names of famous explorers/travel writers for inspiration?
Freya Stark, Isabella Bird, Gertrude Bell (maybe not so much Gertrude), Marianne North...

Liv999 · 31/01/2025 21:02

Manon is really ugly sorry, might be OK in a French accent otherwise no, I prefer Morgan of the other two

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 31/01/2025 20:57

I like Manon, but can only think of it being pronounced the French way. Is it pronounced with a hard 'n' otherwise? Not so nice that way imo. Quite like Morgana rather than Morgan. Merida is great, but obviously it's the name of the character from Brave.

Mirabai · 31/01/2025 20:51

Manon hands down. Merryn is twee.

Manon Skye

janeavrilavril · 31/01/2025 20:42

ChloeCannotCanCan · 31/01/2025 19:51

I love Manon, Morven and Merryn - all feminine yet feisty!

Not a fan of Morgan - the one I know gets called Morgue as a nickname...

GoulashSoup · 31/01/2025 19:46

I love Manon, I like the fact that it is welsh and French.

Lyn348 · 31/01/2025 19:43

I agree with Merryn Skye, beautiful. Morven is awful IMO and sounds like a witches name. Manon and Morgan are really masculine to me.

JC03745 · 31/01/2025 19:39

Merryn Skye is my favourite.

I'm mid 40's and have only seen the name Manon for the 1st time on another post this week! I read it as Man-On, but assume it must be different to that, because IMO, Man-On is dreadful!

Morven/Morgan/Morgana- all remind me of morgue!

Waterboatlass · 31/01/2025 19:36

Merryn or Meredith are lovely. Not a fan of Manon

WaltzingWaters · 31/01/2025 19:34

Merryn Skye

Notthebeard · 31/01/2025 19:33

Love Manon!! Or as a PP suggested Morgana
