Middle name for Opal?

Hi all,

We’re choosing the name Opal for our little girl, we love the name.
However, cannot for the life of me find a middle name that I love. DP says all my suggestions are “nice” but I want one that I just know is right.
We’ve gone through all family members and can’t find a name there that we love.

Any suggestions please?
Surname is one syllable.

Yes I agree with PP, first thing that came to mind was Opal Fruits 😬

Same. I now can’t get “Opal Fruits, made to make your mouth water” out of my head. 😆

Oceangrey · 31/01/2025 23:10

Not sure what the matter is with some people.

She didn't ask your opinion on the name she's already chosen?!
If you don't have a good suggestion for a middle name just... Step away and keep your thoughts to yourself!

Are you really 100% set on this name?

Do you think your little girl will thank you for naming her Opal?

Sorry, not trying to be rude @xRobin it's just not a great name. No-one will think of the pretty gemstone, all they will think of is opal fruits. And... well, I just wouldn't call her this. Sorry. JMO.

I totally agree. It's not a good name. The sound isn't pretty for a girl. Oh-puhl. @xRobin Make sure you give her a prettier middle name so she has an alternative to choose from when she's older.

Horses7 · 31/01/2025 22:47

I don’t think much goes with Opal so would go with one name only - at an absolute push would suggest Opal Rose. Think middle name are overrated.

opal-fruit?

sorry OP its an awful name - you are naming an adult, not a baby!

Again… I didn’t ask for opinions on the name Opal.
You’re clearly an older lady past the years of childbearing so I won’t take your comment to heart.
Opal Fruits was rebranded in 1998 (I was 6).
Opal is a gemstone my love ☺️

Enough4me · 31/01/2025 21:34

I'd go for a strong longer middle name:
Opal Madeleine
Opal Rebecca
Opal Josephine

RudalDweller · 31/01/2025 09:32

Fruit?

🤣

It’s not a ‘myth’ that it is seen by some as an omen of bad luck. It’s true that in ancient times it was seen as a lucky gem but then went through a long long period of history being associated with curses and bad omens, as referenced in much 19th and 20th century literature. The biggest superstition was that it would bring bad luck to anyone who wore an opal but wasn’t born in the month of it as a birthstone (October).

Well, I have a black cat so it’s safe to say I’m not superstitious thankfully.

I'm just going to say that Opal Fruits were renamed in 1998, so all of us who think of them are 2 generations away from your child

well I have an 8 year old so that’s not 2 generations away….

I assumed her point was… does your 8 year old know what Opal Fruits are?
My 7 year old doesn’t.
And this baby’s school friends won’t either, so none of her peers will say “ha ha you’re named after a sweet”.
I was 6 when they changed to Starburst so the majority of the “Fruit” comments on here are those in an older generation x

Opal Joy
Opal Clare
Opal Anne
Opal Jane
Opal May
Opal Boo
Opal Belle

CherryVanillaPie · 31/01/2025 21:00

I'm 53 and I thought of the lovely gem stone. Not starburst's old name back in the 20th century.

CherryVanillaPie · 31/01/2025 20:58

I like Opal. Opal Jean came to mind

Redkatagain · 31/01/2025 20:56

Rose

The name Opal is not popular because it is associated with bad luck. So that, along with opal fruits, makes it a no. It's also a name firmly rooted in black culture - which of course is no issue at all but worth consideration

I’m not convinced you read my post correctly.
I didn’t ask for opinions on the name Opal.
I asked for suggestions for a middle name for the name Opal.
You have not offered me a middle name.
You have oddly said “no” to the name Opal.
The bad luck thing is a myth, the Romans actually thought it was extremely lucky and thought opals brought healing powers.
Opal Fruits was rebranded 27 years ago.
I will look into the black culture reference though thank you 😄 that’s interesting!

coldcallerbaiter · 31/01/2025 20:32

Starburst

Drearyevenings · 31/01/2025 20:31

I think it’s beautiful.

i am at an age where I realise the opal fruits reference but it would definitely not put me off.

It’s very old classic. I would be inclined to go with something else similar, maybe Eloise or Marie.

i do also like Rae as OP have suggested.

Toothpastestain · 31/01/2025 20:31

My first thought was fruit

xRobin · 31/01/2025 20:30

KayEmAy · 31/01/2025 20:09

Opal Alexandra
Opal Juliet
Opal Thea
Opal Maisie
Opal Felicity
Opal Andrea
Opal Emma
Opal Soleil
Opal Dierdre

Opal Wren

I really like Juliet and Wren!
Would Julietta work? (Is that a name?) X

Well I’m 40 and my first thought was the gem stone not opal fruits even though I knew them by that name when I was a kid!
I agree with pp nobody ever uses the full name so just pick a name you love. If you prefer a longer name how about
Opal Eugenie
Opal Vivienne
Opal Azalia
Opal Sophia
Opal Evangeline
Opal Juliet
Opal Delilah

Just going through a few middle names we’ve considered with a 2 syllable first name if our little one is a girl

I really like Evangeline!
My daughter’s name and middle name rolls right off the tongue. I picked her name in an instant so this baby name chaos is new to me 😅 x
