Hi all,

We’re choosing the name Opal for our little girl, we love the name.
However, cannot for the life of me find a middle name that I love. DP says all my suggestions are “nice” but I want one that I just know is right.
We’ve gone through all family members and can’t find a name there that we love.

Any suggestions please?
Surname is one syllable.

What’s everyone’s opinions on:

Opal Sidney

I like it but use Sydney.

40 here and yes my first thought was Opal fruits.

It's a tough one with middle names as not many names seem to flow that well with it but I do actually think Opal Sidney works.

It sounds better than Opal Eloise.

Yeah we’re finding that, I don’t know if it’s the “L” at the end making it hard to flow.
We’re stuck because Sidney is a family name but also the top name on our boys list so make over-thinking mind is saying “what if we have another one and it’s a boy” 😂 x

Just be aware opal fruits are back with the original name. We bought these two weeks ago, just incase you didn’t know.

Regardless if that’s the name you settle in I’d give a strong middle name,

We saw these in Sainsbury’s! We had a right giggle! They’re a Limited Edition return, not sure if it’s for an anniversary or something?

We’re really happy with the name ☺️

Honestly wouldn't stress too much middle names are pretty pointless and rarely used.

Miranda?

I think Opal is a lovely name and I'm plenty old enough to remember the sweets. But my first thought would be the gorgeous gem stone.

Although I like Sidney for a girl well enough I don't like the 2 together. I'd suggest something like Paloma, Aisling, Elodie, Athena, Clara, Evangeline, Francesca or Alexandra.

I think you’re right, they’re both lovely names but don’t quite go together do they?
I really like the name Eloise, such a pretty name! x

fixate
past tense: fixated; past participle: fixated

  1. cause (someone) to develop an obsessive attachment to someone or something

I think you’ve got the wrong word there pal.
You commented on my post again mentioning how some people love it, some people find it ridiculous. I pointed out it seems to be the older generation are less of a fan than people my age.
I did not say everyone my age loves it.

Hahaha I came here to say this!

Me too I’m in my 30s and it’s the first thing that came to mind. I couldn’t get past that lol

most important thing is that you (and partner) like the name!

Thank you! We do really love it x

It’s origin is Sanskrit I believe.
I think it’s personal preference when it comes to the names barrel.
Those who think it’s ridiculous would probably prefer names I wouldn’t pick in 100 years.
Whereas those who loved the name seem to be more my generation and have offered up alternative names that I quite liked 😄

Luckily Starburst and Skittles didn’t make our list x

If your daughter decides in years to come that she wants to change her name, maybe she can use "Starburst"?

Actually to be honest, despite being of a certain age and Opal Fruits coming to mind immediately, Opal is quite nice.

It just makes me think of the cars..Opel Astra, etc . It sounds more like a brand or a product than a name. A simple classic name might work as a second name in case she chooses the use that instead.

Not sure what the matter is with some people.

She didn't ask your opinion on the name she's already chosen?!
If you don't have a good suggestion for a middle name just... Step away and keep your thoughts to yourself!

If you post on a baby name forum asking for opinions, opinions will inevitably happen. @xRobin will just have to cope with it somehow.

A PP suggested Opal Sharon. It's a delicate game of different suggestions and different opinions.
