Can’t decide between Eric or Frederick

Elsa2025 · 30/01/2025 23:26

I find both names Eric and Frederick strong, vibrant, modern, with personality, but I don’t particularly like the nicknames Fred/dy. Does anyone have a son in the UK called Frederick and is actually called Frederick by the teachers ? I would educate people and the child to be called Rick if I pick out the name Frederick. I know people say Rick is short for Richard but I don’t care. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Is Frederick too overdone? What are your experiences with this name? How about Eric?
thanks! X.

He's a teenager and just says he doesn't like it. I don't know why. But he could change his mind again when he's through puberty!

Sorry I've got a Frederick but he refuses to be called this now and will only answer to Fred or Freddie. I preferred Frederick as a full name because it gave him options but at nearly 15 it's up to him what he calls himself.

Why does he refuse it? What is his reason? It is such a stylish and beautiful name. This is one my number 1️⃣ names , but I cannot control what people will say. Having said that, I have a friend who named her son Benedict (another beautiful name). He is 21 now and nobody ever gave him a nickname. My friend also hates nn. She said it took her whole life to educate people. I don’t know how she managed to control that situation.

I would choose Erik with a k, as you can see.

Tisthedamnseason · 01/02/2025 12:44

I would educate people

What do you mean?

How about Alaric? That could only be shortened to Ric(k)

Or more likely to Al, surely.

I prefer Freddy to Eric but agree with pp that if you don’t want a Freddy don’t name him Frederick.

Feelingstrange2 · 01/02/2025 12:11

Eric reminds me of Trump at the moment!

Frederick will become Fred, or if you start a nickname straight away you could pick Erick! Oddly that doesn't remind me of Trump!

@Elsa2025 , have you named your baby already and are having name regret? If you are, please have a word with your health visitor, practice nurse or GP as it might indicate PND.
Both names are fine, normal and fairly popular, but the number of threads on these two names is a bit worrying.

OP, there have been several threads about these two names recently. Have a look at them.

The OP started them all.

I love Eric. And I love an Eric very much too so I approve!

StupidBitchy · 01/02/2025 00:19

Eric. Otherwise you'll spend your whole life irritated when he's called Freddy.
Alternatively could encourage nickname Freddo in honour of national treasure 😉

RogueFemale · 01/02/2025 00:16

Out of the two, definitely Eric.

Mandarinaduck · 31/01/2025 23:13

I like both but would go for Eric as it doesn’t have the nickname issue.

Firebird83 · 31/01/2025 23:03

Just go for Eric

NewHeaven · 31/01/2025 21:42

Franklin
Frances
Felix
Sebastian because I love the name

I'm not keen on Eric, it gives me a middle aged man with a string vest & Essex accent vibes. Sorry.

Leeloo1233 · 31/01/2025 20:34

Eric

theduchessofspork · 31/01/2025 20:09

Frederick is very overdone, Rick isn’t though and if you call him that from the start people will just follow. Ricky is sweet actually.

Eric seems to be getting popular, but it feels more awkward 80s American teen than Viking to me

GriseldaMolestrangler · 31/01/2025 16:11

Shortened versions of Frederick I've seen

Freddie
Fred
Derick
Eric
Rick

Go for Eric

MrWise · 31/01/2025 04:38

Erik

user1492757084 · 31/01/2025 04:26

Too many little Freds about now.

You could use Richard, Warrick, Orick, Derick, Patrick, Rickard, Ricko, Ricardo or Erick.

Oppenovverandout · 31/01/2025 01:31

I much prefer Frederick. I like Freddie as well.

DramaAlpaca · 31/01/2025 01:29

Eric/Erik is so much nicer than Frederick.

mathanxiety · 31/01/2025 00:41

This question again? Is this your fourth thread about Frederick/ Eric?

If you don't like Fred, just call your child Eric.
