Sofia or Sophia?

We want to call our daughter Sofia/Sophia but we cannot decide on the spelling. I am Greek and my partner is British. Any other Greek mums out there? Which spelling did you choose?

OP- you maybe don't want to make this into a name suggestion thread but the names on our Anglo-Greek girls list were: Christina, Melina, Arianna, Zoe, Cara, Sophia and Artemis.

Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, it's a place name like Paris or London.

Yeah I know but somehow I don’t associate it with the city. Similarly, Paris is a beautiful Greek mythology male name which I love and I don’t associate it with city, even though very often reminds me of Paris Hilton 😩😂

I know it’s very common in the UK and funnily enough not very popular in Greece. Tbh I don’t love it but we chose it as it is one of the few names that is Greek but it has also become an international name.

Sophia - much more elegant looking IMO, and the standard UK spelling so she’s less likely to have to correct it

But there were a LOT of them a couple years back, should that bother you

@karpouzi , as pp, phi is interpreted as 'ph' not 'f' .Philip not Filip etc

I know. But that middle letter is ‘phi’ in mathematics not ‘fi’.

As an Italian and a Sofia, I would vote for that spelling, but if you are Greek, then Sophia would make more sense. My experience has been that people always asked in the UK, but here in the USA they almost always assume it's PH.

If she's half greek then I'd pick Sophia, but I prefer Sofia otherwise.

But I think it doesn't matter too much - both spellings are widely known, she'll have to spell it whichever one you choose, so just pick the one you like best.

I thought the Greek version is with a ph and the Spanish an f? My DS is Sophia and we both prefer the ph, I think it looks softer.

My husband is Greek and Sophia made our shortlist of girls names. Didn't use it in the end though. We preferred the 'ph' spelling since we live in the UK.
