Casper/Jasper/something else

Thoughts on Casper/Jasper?
What do they evoke?
Would like something kind of fancy sounding (other child's name is mildly aristocratic - miss me with the judgement, they're just the sort of names we like/have in the family)
Also, I know Casper reminds everyone of the ghost, but I don't really see that as a big deal 🤷‍♀️

Wonder if both names are just a bit too common now, seem to be quite a few Jaspers around anyway.

Would love your thoughts, or alternative ideas.

Thanks! :-)

Btw...the name derives from the bible, one of the three wise men so means treasurer (gold).

creamcheeseandlox · 14/01/2025 17:42

I have a Casper, 13yr old. No one comments on the ghost thing. It's a film from the 90's so only middle aged people comment if at all. I love his name, don't meet many boys called Casper at all. The A spelling is more on the continent I think.

ShmackAttack · 14/01/2025 17:27

I have a very unposh 12 year old Jasper and it suits him and I still love the name, he and his name are my favourite

BootballJoy · 14/01/2025 16:39

I like Caspar best but both are nice. Also like Felix, Otto, Rollo and Tristan for a similar vibe.

DaftyLass · 14/01/2025 16:38

The only Jasper I knew got teased and called Gasper, so personally I go with Casper

user2848502016 · 14/01/2025 16:36

I like both, probably prefer Jasper slightly
(Ps I would spell it Casper and I'm in the UK!)

Sandyview · 14/01/2025 16:34

I love Jasper , we were going to call 2nd child this if we’d had another boy. Not overly keen on Casper but it doesn’t really remind me of the ghost either. I do know more little Caspers than Jaspers though.
Our son is Miles, we also considered Jago, Edward and Hector.

toastofthetown · 14/01/2025 15:57

Casper is the most popular spelling in England and Wales by a fair way (spellings and rankings are Casper 193, Kacper 69, Kasper 67, Caspar 66, Kaspar 7). Both Casper and Caspar are probably derived from the Hebrew גִּזְבָּר or gizbar, so neither are the ‘original’ spelling and both variants are acceptable in English.

Mirabai · 14/01/2025 15:28

Or maybe you didn’t notice. It slightly depends how old you are - the Casper spelling was only popularised when the film came out.

I know 3 Caspars and they’re all with an a. There’s also Caspar Jopling and Caspar Berry etc

sel2223 · 14/01/2025 14:41

I've never seen it spelled Caspar either OP and I'm born and bred in the UK.

I think Casper is the more recognised spelling these days

Persista · 14/01/2025 14:40

Oh is it? I haven't come across that spelling before. I feel like he'd always be correcting people?
I don't mind the friendly ghost reference :-)

I’m sure you have - it’s Caspar in the bible, one of the 3 kings.

I think you’d be more likely to be correcting people in the U.K. if you spell it er.

He’d have to specify anyway. Like Anne with an E etc.

pennyfig · 14/01/2025 13:30

Mirabai · 14/01/2025 13:26

It’s spelt Caspar in the U.K. which gets you away from the ghost - but the film was 20 years ago anyway.
