Lucie

I thought we had narrowed it down to just four names, but my husband doesn't really want to let go of Lucy.

I do like it, but think it is a bit overdone and the bad publicity the name got last year is still on my mind, even though I know there are lots of other associations.

For some reason I like Lucie a lot better and could choose it more easily than Lucy. Is it a bad idea because it will cause confusion or is it bearable to say "Lucie, ends in "ie"" every time?

I guess we'd have a similar problem with Keira anyway, which is also on our list. My guess is that with Keira people are expecting one of three/four spellings, though (Keira, Kiera, Ciara, Kira) whereas with Lucy they will expect Lucy and not Lucie.

Does anyone have a popular name that is usually spelled one way with a slightly different spelling (e.g. Hollie instead of Holly, Elinor instead of Eleanor, Elly instead of Ellie)? Was it annoying or not a big problem?

The other ones are Ruby, Rosalind, Keira, Annabel and my favorite would be Ruby Rosalind at the moment. My husband's are Keira Rose and Lucy Rosalind.

I have to spell my first name (has two common spellings) AND my surname every single time but it has never bothered me in the slightest. Takes a couple of seconds at most , takes longer to give my mobile number or email address which seems to happen far more often now!

Lucy and Lucie are both adorable with Rosalind.

Beatrix Potter's book The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle features a small girl called Lucie.
Buy the book for your Lucie.

Don't spell it Lucie, she will spend her whole life spelling it and cursing the pair of you. Just go for Ruby or Annabel

Marcipex · 11/12/2024 22:07

I think Lucie is pretty. I don’t think it matters that there is a more usual spelling.
Look at all the ways of spelling Layla, Catherine, Lily, Madeleine, Molly, Isabel.
It doesn’t stop people using them.

My dd also likes having the middle name Rose, because so many of her friends are called the same. They like all having the same name.

Much prefer Lucy. A gorgeous classic imo

I have an ie ending on my name which is typically spelt with a ‘y’ ending
It’s never bothered me, a lot of people actually ask now is it y or ie , if anyone has ever misspelt it I’ve either corrected them or just let it go depending on circumstance. I can’t say it’s ever caused an issue

Sunnyflow · 11/12/2024 19:07

I think Lucy Letby unfortunately

Drivingoverlemons · 11/12/2024 18:52

Lucy is a lovely name. Use Lucie if you want. I have to spell my surname every time and it doesn’t really bother me.

GinaDreamsofRunningAway · 11/12/2024 18:50

I'm a Lucie. It has honestly never bothered me in the slightest that I have to say 'with an ie' and its certainly not a problem. I actually quite like that it is spelt differently than most people expect it to be.

salamithumbs · 11/12/2024 18:44

My name's Katy and people tend to spell it as Katie. I don't really care - if it matters I'll spell it out for them and if it doesn't I just leave it (not really bothered what gets written on my takeaway coffee!)
I think either Lucy or Lucie would be fine! Although I don't think you need to worry about the Lucy Letby connection as there are lots of Lucys so it's not the main association that will spring to mind for most people

hiddenselkie · 11/12/2024 16:44

I love the name Lucy and also love simplicity when it comes to names - maybe I’m lazy but I’d soon get sick of correcting the spelling.

hiddenselkie · 11/12/2024 16:01

If you don't like Lucy, don't go for Lucie. I like Rosalind the best, how about Rosalind Lucy... you both need to agree to a name, don't just accept name you don't like just because of your husband. Why don't you find new names and start anew, since neither you or your husband like each others list.

FayCarew · 11/12/2024 16:00

The Lucy spelling is the usual one. It will probably be misspelt on a daily basis.

Lucy Rosalind is beautiful.

I don't like Keira, and Keira Rose is too many Rs. Rose is overused as a middle name.

iusedtohavechickens · 11/12/2024 15:58

I have a Lucie, she's 22 now and lives her name as it's different but due to all her medical appointments I have said with an ie many times that now I do it without realising!
We also have a kyrie which I have to spell out every time 😂

BuzzieLittleBee · 11/12/2024 15:54

She will spend her whole life saying 'Lucie with an I E'. It will be tiresome for her. I'd say stick with Lucy. Which is a lovely name, BTW.
